Accepted into Gemstone but would rather be in EIP. Mech Engineering major who is nervous about workload that comes with being an engineering major and in Gemstone. Any advice? If it is not possible to switch, what are the pros of Gemstone and is the workload manageable? Thanks.
Someone please answer this I have the same problem
Hmm,@college 13254, I think you would be fine initially, but as the engineering courses get increasingly challenging, the problem is that Gemstone is four years, not two, so I understand your concern. The thing is that you do have the power to choose your own research project, and it need not be as intense as your peers, but you just need to find teammates that feel the same way.
@college13254 and @alwaysnervous My son had a friend in Gemstone, so I know it’s a major time commitment, but it is VERY selective and they must have seen something in both of your applications to merit their confidence. You can certainly request to be reconsidered for EIP/ILS, but they are very popular and space is limited, so I don’t know if that is realistic. If there is a waitlist (some people have mentioned that), you can asked to be placed on it.
Worst case scenario is that you try Gemstone, and if you really don’t like it, you can switch to the more general university honors. You get a citation on your transcript for being in honors college either way.
