Hey everybody Im stuck in a situation and looking for some opinions. I graduated back in Oct with a BS in ET thats not ABET accreditted. My plan was to transfer to U of H in the EE program but because my degree is ET and its not ABET I am not able to. U of H still accepted me, but I chose the MET program since I have a basic knowledge of electronics, but Im curious after my basics if I can transfer to the ME program. My goal is to be an engineer and then eventually go to graduate school. U of H also offers Master of Technology in Engineering Technology. Has anybody ever heard of that before? Would it be worth it to try and go to a graduate program like that? Of course I would love to graduate as an engineer and looking for ideas on how to do this. Orientation for me starts in Jan. and thats when I speak with my advisor but I thought I would drop this question here first.
Thanks.

It’s tough to transfer to any school, in AZ I did my general studies at a community college but made sure it transferred to ASU before I took them all. The school basically has to look at every class you took and try to apply it to the classes in the curriculum you’re trying to transfer it to which can be hard especially if the school is private.

I’m also doing MET and our school website lets us check our credits to other degrees so I did it against the ME and basically only the general studies and calc courses count. I’m sure I could get overrides for some of them but most likely you’d be looking at 2 more years of school if you have an MET.

By the way if you don’t mind me asking, where did you go to school and why are you trying to go back for an ME now?

Im embarrassed to say but I got my BS in ET at Devry. I really didnt do enough research on the school before I started, didnt know anything about ABET. I remember even asking the advisor if I would be graduating as an engineer and he said yes. During my second year is when I realized what type of school it was but I figured I would graduate and then transfer to U of H for an EE or ME degree. Reason why I want to go back as an ME or EE is my career goal of working in a R&D group. I love the idea of being able to research and then design/build from my ideas. Im sure I need an MS for this type of work. Now I know I have a BS in ET but I think because its not ABET accreditted Im only going to get technician type jobs. Im not concerned about making six figure salary its the passion of an R&D career. I chose MET because I like the idea of mixing electronics with mechanics. They also have a CET program which Im considering.

That sucks man, I almost went to devry too, glad I didn’t because not only is it not ABET accredited but it’s also somewhere like 50k for the degree. There should really be laws against this sort of thing but then again people should do their research too.

But still, all you can really do is sit down with the college you want to go to and see if they can transfer any of your courses over.

Just to let you know my degree was around 48k, but one positive thing is that Im a disabled veteran so it was paid for. I just had surgery again so with physical theraphy I wont be able to work for another 2-3 yrs. I was thinking when I speak with U of H Im gonna see if I can hopefully completely start over for an EE or ME degree. Possibly use my ET degree for internships and that its from Devry wont hinder that. I live in Texas and there is something called the Hazelwood Act that pays for college tuition for veterans. So there still is light at the end of the tunnel. I learned my lesson with Devry, but hopefully I can still get that engineering degree
