Is it possible to take classes in departments other than the one you are majoring in?

I’ve been accepted into the School of Engineering, and was wondering if it is possible for me to take elective classes in the music school, as I know this isn’t possible in some schools. Music is a big part of my life, and the ability for me to take a Music class while majoring in Engineering is actually the deciding factor of which school I will accept my offer from.

Anybody know anything?

You can take classes in any department and any school. You can double major in your school and another school too if you like; it is called BUCOP.

Specifically about music, you’d have to read the list of classes because not all are open to non-CFA students. Many music classes are offered through CAS as well and of course those are open, but CFA is a professional school.

You can play in the all school orchestra, for example, but the CFA orchestra (music school) is generally for music students only.

There are a bunch of Music Appreciation or Music History classes that anyone can take. You can also take guitar, piano, singing lessons etc etc etc for 0.5 credits just for fun.

Some of the music classes require extra fees or they require you to own the instrument.

I got intothe college of arts and science but I want to be in the school of management can I just change into that school?

You should try to sort that out at Orientation. I know a girl who got into CAS and transfered to Sargent at Orientation. But they probably make these decisions case by case, so I can’t guarantee you anything.

Also, you can double major in more than one school Ben. So you might consider majoring in both CAS and SMG.

I’m actually trying to do this exact same thing. I emailed the admissions office and got a reply asking for the school and major I wanted to transfer into. They “cannot guarantee anything, but can certainly have someone from the board of admissions look into it as a possibility.”
