Is it possible to tell a school that you won't be attending anymore?

The problem is that I had already paid the deposit for one school, but now I have the chance to attend another better school. Can I just tell the first school that I won't be attending anymore?

Yes you can contact the original school and let them know that you will not be attending. It happens all the time with waitlists. However, you will not get your deposit back. Also, though it should not need to be said, plese don’t say that you are going to “a better school”.

It wasn’t exactly a waitlist. I applied to the better school once I had already been accepted to the other. Does that make a difference?

No one is going to drag you to the campus and tie you to a chair. If you don’t want to go to a school, you simply notify them that you have decided not to attend (promptly, so you spot can be offered to another student). You don’t have to give them a reason, and they don’t have to give you back your deposit.
