I am not going to the army. . but I just wanted to know if it was possible to start my first semester, take a semester off then come back..

yes, there is a way to withdraw and reenter. As long as you are not on academic probation when you leave, coming back is ‘noncompetitive’, meaning just a matter of filing all the paperwork. However, you have to do the withdrawal right to grease the skids for re-entry.

Also, with the study abroad programs many do take a semester or year off to study elsewhere. [Berkeley Programs for Study Abroad](http://eap.berkeley.edu)
