Right now I'm on the track to transfer from a CA community college to a UC, and I think I can bring my GPA up to a 3.4 by the end of fall. I figured out of state and privates were a lost cause, and I was wondering if I was right? My GPA is low but it will have an upward grade trend. I'd be applying for a non competitive major (philosophy) and I'm currently in the process of taking 16 upper division Phil units at UCB this summer, which will look very good if I get high grades (I think I'll be getting 2 A-s and 2 As, the department average is a B-). I have 3 semesters of Ws and ARs which is bad but I was working 60-70 hrs/week and I couldn't handle the workload, and I figure that those 3 semesters of nothing is better than average grades and a ton of Ws and ARs spread amongst my 4 years at school.

So what do you guys think? Do I have a reasonable shot at top 40 schools other than the UCs?
