Is it possible to transfer to a UC University by your junior year at Chapman?

I'm really excited and please about my daughter's interest in Chapman University, however, my wife and I are aware of my daughter's interest in UC Berkeley, where she would like to ultimately wind up at......Does some one know of UC's criteria as far as admissions to Private school applicants from schools such as Chapman? I hear they give preference to California 2 yr. graduates, and applicants that are already in the UC system.....Thank you

I would post this inquiry at UCB, there are probably incoming transfers there, who could give you first hand advice. Although I’m not so familiar with the UC system, I don’t see where too many Chapman prospectives would take the same route your D may be contemplating. Much luck to you in this process!

My best friend is deciding between UCBerkeley (AKA Cal) and Chapman. Here is her dilemma. She was accepted into the music program with a scholarship at Chapman. The music classes have fewer than a dozen students at Chapman and they have opera. Berkeley doesn’t even audition for entry into the music program, but they have tons of music teachers and they claim to be number 3 in the state. Someone there has done opera scenes but no opera.

In film, people like Tom Hanks and Ted Danson have sent their kids to Chapman. Some Ivy’s will give an automatic entry to kids of people with celebrity status. A lot of movies have been filmed at Chapman. Chapman is close to the heart of the film industry but is in a better area.

Here is another difference. The Congressman for Chapman is Ed Royce, though I suspect something really funny happened with the votes in the last election. Berkeley has Barbara Lee.

Chapman is in the safest area of Southern California. Berkeley is a city where students are occasionally attacked if they wander into the wrong area of town at the wrong time.

The key to transferring would be to make sure your daughter has the GE requirements for Berkeley.

At Berkeley, you are looking at classes with 800 students and TAs. At Berkeley, they’ll throw the students on the street to look for their own housing in the junior and senior years. Transfers give either a semester of a year of housing.

I hadn’t thought of the transfer idea, but it might be the best of small classes for early years and prestige later on.

Berkeley claims to be number 3 in the U.S. in music. Also, Chapman is accredited by the National Association of Music Schools. Berkeley is not.

Thank you funfun for your thoughtful reply, my daughter’s choices were ucsd, uci, and Chapman, she chose Chapman because of their Financial package, whereas, the uc’s offered her nothing…Go figure…
