Hi, I have recently taken the SATs and I think I did bad, maybe like 1700s? Anyways, I'm worried about colleges because I want to get into a good college, of course.
My question is that with that SATs score, is it possible for me to get into Columbia University/NYU? Because I really want to major in Engineering(Biomedical/Chemical/etc) and those are my colleges that I really want to get in.

And in case you said "It's impossible", then I would like to know if it is possible to transfer from a CUNY/SUNY to Columbia University/NYU. Because if I don't get into those colleges, then I'll pick City College. And I'm wondering if I can transfer to Columbia University/NYU after a year or whenever you're allowed to transfer in City College. Is it possible? My mom said it's possible but then you have to waste a semester because they don't let you start until one semester is over. But what if I have a good GPA? What's considered to be a good GPA?

You can find out a lot about what SAT scores are reasonable for various colleges by searching for college info on the CollegeBoard.com web site. The scores listed will be the MIDDLE 50 %, so 25% do better than the posted ranges and 25% do worse. I would guess that your scores are quite low for Columbia, but I don’t know.

You can find out more about who is admitted and what their statistics are by looking at Columbia’s Common Data Set. I think there’s a thread somewhere on College Confidential about where CDSs live for various schools. Also you can just search for “Columbia University Common Data Set”.

You can find out even more by going to the Columbia University thread here on College Confidential (go to the Colleges link on the left of the page, but since Columbia is an Ivy, go to the Ivy League link on the left of the page instead). You can read the posts there and you can go to the “applicant stats” link near the top of the page - it will show you some of the people who applied, their statistics, and whether they got in.

Transferring to selective colleges is often harder than getting in as a freshman. If you didn’t do well enough in high school to get into the selective college, and you want to transfer, your GPA at college has to be good enough to show that you’ve gotten your act together and can handle the workload at the new college.

You seem to not know much except that you want to get into a famous school - there are many hundred excellent schools in the country - you can consider schools that are NOT ivies but will love you and nurture you as well. You could also search for “colleges that change lives” to get a perspective on non-famous schools that can serve you as well as or maybe better than the name-brand schools.
