I want to attend NYU more than anything but I was rejected this fall. I would like to know would it be possible for me to apply as a transfer in freshman year? the minimum credits we need are 16. I don’t want to waste time at another school and then only get the NYU experience for 1-2 years.
So you’re saying you’d enroll as a freshman at a school you’ve been accepted to and apply for Spring 2022 admit? If so, yes you could apply to transfer for Spring 2022 or Fall 2022 if you’d have enough credits.
However, I’d suggest thinking about why you weren’t accepted and will one semester at college give you time to strengthen your application? Your application, as far as your HS record, test scores and ECs won’t change much since the app is due by November 1. You will only have a few weeks to engage in ECs and such at your current school.
According to the NYU website they say “Our most competitive applicants have completed at least 32 credits/points of coursework by the time they enroll at NYU”.
I agree with the prior comment. If they just rejected you, why do you think that decision would change if you apply again right away? You need to do something at the college you attend first- get good grades, join clubs, etc. You need to give NYU something new to change their mind.
What they aren’t telling me and what i cant find out is do they consider A-Level subjects as university credits? They’ve written that a grade of B or above in any 1 subject equals 8 credits. By that statement ill have 24 credits since i have 3 subjects. and i believe we earn around 10-15 credits in our first term our college. That would put me well above the min 32 credit for transfers.
I’d write to the admissions office and ask specifically. My gut is no because first year international applicants include:
You are applying from countries with school leaving qualifications based on the British educational model, and will have completed the A-level equivalent (neither O-levels nor (I)GCSE results will be sufficient for admission).
Transfer applicants must first meet the high school requirements above and also meet other criteria.
Thank you so much. You see thats the thing. One of the other criteria is to have a minimum of 24 uni credits. If 3 A level subjects are equivalent to 24 uni credits then why should they consider them?
Sorry if I’m not understanding your question.
In the US, UK college = US high school
UK uni = US college/university.
Some US university/colleges give credit for AP courses taken in HS when you’re entering as a freshman but not as a transfer for example. So your A-level classes are not the equivalent of a university course in the US.
If you’re graduating from your college this spring that’s the equivalent of the US seniors graduating from high school. You’d all be entering freshman this Fall 2021.
If you don’t like any of your university choices you could take a gap year and reapply as a freshman for Fall 2022. You could use that time for internships, jobs etc…to strengthen your application.
Or you could start a school in the UK and apply to transfer as a sophomore but again it won’t give you much time to update your application.
If you transfer as a junior have at least 2 years at NYU because they require transfers to enroll for 4 semesters at a minimum. You might need to stay longer depending on how your courses transfer.
Also as an aside, I think I remember in some of threads you wrote in that you needed financial aid. That’s going to hurt you with NYU. They’re not very generous with their FA.
True but there’s no way for you to reapply for spring 2022 admit. I don’t believe NYU does a spring admit for freshmen. And just reapplying with your same app wouldn’t accomplish anything. There’s very little chance they’d just change their mind with out something new to consider.
Ok , those are credits given to freshman once they’re enrolled. Depending on the class, NYU will give credit for those classes toward the total number of credits needed to graduate. It enables students to skip intro classes, or provides extra credits towards graduation so they can graduate in less than 4 years, or they can do a study abroad and not worry about fulfilling certain classes, or they can take fewer classes one semester if they have a particularly heavy workload etc…
A-levels are treated like AP classes. Neither of them are used for transfer application credit minimums.
I guess im screwed then. This is so devastating. I honestly dont know what to do or think at this moment.
I honestly cant thank you enough. you’ve provided more information to me than anyone else.
I’m so sorry! The US system can be very challenging for international students. You seem very ambitious. I’m sure you’ll do well wherever you go!
I still encourage you to contact the admissions office and discuss any possible options that aren’t readily apparent to you or me.
i dont think i have it in me. I called the admissions officer and as they were introducing themselves i started crying. I always dreamed of talkin to these guys in person. You know i dreamed of going to NYU ever since i watched the movie The Sorcerers Apprentice in which the lead character goes to NYU. and that was in 2011. Everything about NYU is my dream. The city life. A campus without a campus. Its where i belong.
I apologize if that may sound cringy.
Would you ever consider a uni in European city? London, Edinburgh?
Give yourself some room to be disappointed and grieve. It’s been a brutal admissions cycle! It’s so disappointing and frustrating but if NYU is really your ideal school I encourage you to start school, work hard, get involved etc…and apply to transfer as a junior. It gives you the best chance for acceptance and 2 years in NYC would be a great experience! Or you could apply for a post grad degree at NYU.
It is very possible! I know several people who have done so but you would need to apply to the SPS!
Closing thread. The OP has not been active in months. If they return and want to provide an update, they can PM me and I will reopen.
