Is it possible to transfer with Finantial Aid?

Hi,

I am an International Student living in Peru. I have been recently admited to the University of Kansas with a great Finantial Aid package that covers my needs. I would only have to pay 12k a year (which is just about what my family can contribute).
I think I will be attending KU this fall, and they have a good engineering program as I believe. I want to major in computer science but I have the idea that I may apply for transfer into a university with a stronger CS program (maybe ine from top 20).

As one of my concerns is my finantial situations, would it be possible to obtain a FA package as nearly as good as the one I have at KU from another university if I apply for transfer?

Just to know, does it look bad that I am planning on transfer before I get into the university first? Maybe it is, but I would really like to get the best I can if I am able to.

Greetings from Lima!

It is very difficult for transfer students to receive good financial aid packages. It is very hard for international students to receive good financial aid packages. This means that it would be even more difficult in your own case. Not impossible, but something that certainly is very nearly so.

If you want to begin studying in the US this year, it looks like KU is your only affordable option. You can start there, work very hard, and apply for transfer. You might find that you are happy at KU and don’t want to transfer after all.

Which universities do employers in your country prefer? They may not care provided it is a US degree. If they do care, then you might want to take a gap year and reapply to the universities that the employers want you to have a degree from.

Thank you for your comment.

KU is my only affordable option if I want to study in the US. Employers in Peru tend to ovevalue any degree obtained from an american university, so I would not have any problem with getting a good job.
But I want to major in computer science (which is not a strong area of study here in Lima) and would like to enter the gaming indsutry (which is also not much developed, US market is way ahead in this aspect).
I will put all my effort from day one, because I would also like to apply fro grad school. I was also wondering if it would be possible for me to consider the transfer option. I know I can apply, but the problem is if it would be affordable in anotehr university too.
One more question: If I apply for transfer admission to antoher university, will my current university (which will be KU) “eliminate” me from their student list? I am just curious about it, because I do not know how it works in the US.

If you transfer, you will no longer be on the departing school’s roster.

congrats that you have found an affordable school as an international student. You should be fine with KU and if you do well, you will be able to get in a good graduate school which will really account for your future career advancement.

I am also planning to attend grad school, and I would be definitely a better one than KU. I don’t try to go with a bad idea of Knasas before even taking a class, but I think it would be a good idea to apply for a trasnfer at another school with a better CS program.
I will start a more profound reasearch in a few months. If any of you have some comments, opinions I will appreciate it a lot!.

It’s entirely possible to get financial aid, but like other have said, transfers usually get significantly less than freshmen :</p>

Any way, it seems that I should considers universities that offer need blind admission. That is what I should be aiming at, the problem is that they are Stanford, Harvard, Cornell… Which are very difficult to get in…
I will not give up. This only means that I should do my best at KU. Do you know what other things they consider apart from grades?
