WHAT ARE MY CHANCES FOR PEABODY I WANT TO MAJOR IN COGNITIVE SCIENCE OR SOMETHING IN THAT AREA AND I AM PLANNING TO APPLY EARLY DECISION. ALSO DO YOU THINK I HAVE A BETTER SHOT AT NYU STEINHARDT EARLY DECISION THAN VANDY?

Someone please respond to this I can stop thinking about Vandyland it is the epitome of what college should be.

Well you seem to have everything going for you except for that GPA. I know your school does not rank, but do they put give you an approximate class standing? My HS does not rank but they say like "4.0-4.5 is 20%, 4.0-3.5 is 30%", etc. If you had anything like that then it would be easier to gauge your chances. Also, are your grades consistent or is there an upward/downward trend?

My GPA was average freshman year, went down sophomore year and went way up junior year. There was also the fact that I had a lot of family things which sort of played a role in this. According to the rankings scale which you have said I would definitely be in the top 50%, but other than that I am unsure. My school told me that they only report the highest and lowest gpa to give teh college an idea about who the student really is.

I am applying next year, I just wanted to know my chances also, I made that screen name at the beginning of my freshman year and a lot has changed since. So please respond with what you think and not more questions.

Everything looks solid except that awful GPA. You mentioned that your school is rigorous; is it rigorous enough that your GPA is respectable? Unless there are extenuating circumstances, this will really hurt your chances. Also, it is somewhat difficult to predict your chances since so many of your activities and scores are "expected." For example, the AP's your senior year that you are unsure about could play a significant role in admissions.

Here's my advice: Bring up the GPA and take the most rigorous courseload you can. Also, people tend to be overly optimistic when predicting their SAT scores. I have no idea if you are one of these people, but just make sure that you invest time in preparing so that you get a score that accurately represents your abilities. I think you should apply as an Asian since Vanderbilt is only 7% Asian. BTW, what level of ARML do you participate in?

That GPA may be reported by the school differently and it could be vindicated largely with recommendations and high AP scores. I know teachers that grade tests in AP classes without the AP scale.

To the person who questioned wanting to go to Peabody as pre-med, I know plenty of students who are pre-med and in Peabody. It doesn't matter what you major in. It's also much easier to boost your GPA in HOD than it is in Chemistry or BME.

To Pre-medwannabe, make sure that your essays are great. Peabody isn't as numbers driven as A&S might be. They do look at the overall student and shouldn't rule you out because of your GPA.

You said that there was some family stuff that contributed to your low GPA sophmore year. If you write your admissions essay about this and explain how it affected you and how you were able to overcome it and bounce back in your senior year(which I assume you will try to do) they'll give you a little understanding. The essay, SAT scores, and GPA are three most important factors in the application. Everuthing else is important too, but these three things are the foundation. Your SAT scores and a killer essay can compensate somewhat for the GPA, but I'm not going to lie, it looks bad. Good Luck!
