Is it possible/practical to do all or practically all of my premed requirements at a UC? Right now I'm at a CCC, and I applied for fall 2010. This semester I decided that I want to eventually be a psychiatrist instead of a psychologist. By making this decision, I'll obviously have to go to med school. As of now, I have no premed requirements done other than 1 year of English.

Thus, I ask this question: Should I stay an extra year at my CCC (I am so ready to leave lol) and do some premed requirements? OR should I go to a UC (preferrably Cal or Davis) and sort of rush to get everything done.

Is it possible to stay 2.5-3 years at the UC I go to?

Any help would be awesome, and assume for now, that if I go to a UC....and if I get in, it'll be Cal.

it’s possible, but it’s not really a smart thing to do. Most of the Medical School Pre reqs are lower division courses. If you wait till after you transfer to take them, it’ll take you much longer to get graduate. There’s nothing wrong with taking your pre reqs at a CC as long as you do well in your upper level science courses at a UC and do well in your MCAT. It’ll raise eyebrows if you do well in your pre reqs at a CC and then bomb at the UC though.

it’ll be a rush, but you could do it. You’ll have to really plan out your time there, and most likely do summers. You can also petition to stay longer.

But you said you applied UCB phil, so if you go there I don’t think it’s too practical to try to cram all of that in. Especially considering the fact that the premed courses are soooo competitive, and the phil classes average GPA is a 3.2 (so I’m inferring that they are also tough). So if you’re dead set on UCB, maybe you should wait and reapply next year under a different major. You’d have time to get some premed stuff taken care of, and you can boost your GPA to be competitive as a psych applicant.

My major is psychology for all campuses I applied to (UCLA, Davis, UCSC) except UCB (philosophy). However, complicating matters, is that I’m thinking of possibly switching to Psych at UCB. I know it’s impacted/capped, but I was told that if I do my last prereq over summer (Anthropology) I should be able to double major, or possibly even switch over to Psych. I have a 4.0 in the Psych prereqs.

If everything were to go right and I managed to switch into the Psych major at UCB, would it be possible/practical for me to make this plan work? I would use every summer to make it happen in 2-2.5 years if possible.

ktb555 do you think it would be more possible if I were to just go to Davis and do this plan? I’m already TAG-ed as a Psych major there.

I’d really prefer to not stay another year at my CCC. I’ve been here for 5 semesters and I’m excited to possibly attend a great school in one of these UC’s.

Do you guys think I could get out in 2 years if I used every summer? I really want to make this work, but again, I have to be realistic about everything.

its actually very easy to switch majors at berkeley even if its capped. The only hard thing would be switching to haas or engineering which is basically impossible if you got in as L&S. I got in as a math major and i just declared econ this semester and am declaring a double major in math and econ after this spring. I don’t see why you wouldn’t be able to graduate in 2 years if you put in the effort. Its just that the curves for classes like Bio1A and Chem3A/B are harsh. If you want to goto med school though, i highly suggest you do not spend every summer taking classes. If you do that you’re cutting yourself off from a lot of research opportunities and internships.

Ahhh JetForcegeminix, I just breathed a major sigh of relief! That’s all great news. My counselor at my CCC and many people here have told me otherwise, but I’m glad that I should be able to switch to Psych (my real passion). Well, I would maybe just use this summer for med school prereqs…I’m planning on doing Chem 3A over this summer, and an Anthro class for the Psych major.

Do you think I could still get out in 2-2.5 years? I’m sorry to be repeating many of the same questions about all of this, but I’m really nervous about everything lol and I want to make going to med school a reality. That’s why I’m so open and interested to hear any advice. I really trust you guys on College Confidential, and since I’ve been here, I’ve received some amazing advice.

Thanks for all the help Cantabilen, ktb, and JetForce.

“Transfer applicants should choose their major carefully. Transfer students are not permitted to change majors after admission to the College of Engineering.”

edit: oh wait you were asking for the other direction. I think it’d be pretty much impossible as well. Would you even have prereqs completed? You’d pretty much have to have all the lower div prereqs completed since you have to apply in the fall.

yea, econ’s my primary interest, so i’m definitely doing econ, bioengineering is second haha, but i couldn’t finish prereqs in one year…though it’s possible i could do so over summer, and business is my 3rd interest, so i’d still be happy if i ended up doing econ+haas…though it would be nice to be able to switch from haas to bioengineering if i can finish the prereqs over summer…but oh well, if i feel like killing myself i have the option of econ+haas+minor in bioe lol
