Is it realistic to think a Tisch student can work PT while in school?

As the originator of this thread and now a month into my daughter’s freshman year at NSB I can tell you that I’ve seen the light. I honestly do not know how with her schedule she could possibly add part-time work on top of it unless it would mean she never ever sleeps. As it is, she is barely sleeping.

She did apply to do some work in the dorm mailroom but I believe those positions went to someone with work study money. It was probably a blessing in disguise. She’ll just have to earn what she can over breaks at least for this year. Sounds like our experience is a common one. Thanks for all of the replies.

smart decision halflokum!!!

thank you tutu17. Though in fairness, there does appear to be time for a cappella and for applying to be an admissions rep. Don’t get me wrong, I’m in favor of both and would not want her to miss out on either experience. But to be clear for anyone that reads this thread in future, if one REALLY HAD TO WORK and I don’t mean for Starbucks money I’m talking about subway fare, a sandwich during those late nights when the dining hall is closed but you were stuck in studion etc. necessity would make different things move to the top of the priority list and a part time job “could” be one of them provided you could find something that works with your available hours (which admittedly are few and far between.)

well said! I agree and in that case, one of the jobs at the university might be perfect!

My daughter was in Stella Adler, not MT. There was no way she could have held a job her freshman year! But her 2nd year, Stella Adler Studio hired her to work backstage and tear down sets after performances. It wasn’t a lot of hours, usually 3 - 8 per week.

Her 3rd year, she was prop mistress at Stella Adler, and she could call her own hours for that. Plus she got a work study job at the NYU Theater Dept. as a carpenter, and worked 5 - 8 hours per week. If she had a particularly grueling week, she could reschedule. it was a good job, and she learned new skills, which still help her earn money now that she’s graduated.

She continues to get work from the people at Stella Adler, so I’m glad she accepted their first offer to work with them. Those same people continue to pass audition leads to her as well.
