Just wondering many sites claim the CSS is full of mostly nerds and geeks. Are all students geeky video game ayers or are there some athletes and outdoorsmen. Also, what’s the hippie crowd like? Nonexistent?

My son is planning on attending the Colorado School of Mines and took a look at some engineering and computer science courses during a recent visit. From what he told me, it seems to be a fairly ordinary bunch of people - not just people of the geeky variety. That’s only what my son thought after one visit though, so take it with a grain of salt.

Hey late reply sorry, I don’t frequent here except when bored (or in this case sick). To answer your question most of the students here are geeky in the regard that every single one of us is pursuing a STEM degree. Thus you can sit down and talk to pretty much anyone at the school about math or science and not be talking way over their heads even if they don’t know much about the specific field.

However we’re located in Golden, CO literally nestled against the foothills so the outdoor scene is pretty big. Hiking, camping, slack-lining, climbing, mountain biking, skiing/snowboarding, ice climbing, etc. We have some very outdoors oriented people here and love it.

Hippie wise, not huge if at all? CU Boulder is only 30 minutes north of us so… Anyways I don’t know enough about that scene to speak on it personally.

Just went and visited Mines last week with my D. We are from California. Everyone seemed pretty darn normal. Lots of people out playing a sport on Fri afternoon or packing up for a ski trip

Son and I went for a visit last March; took a tour with a student; and met with an admissions counselor; and went through the little museum there where several students worked. Everyone was great. We could tell the admissions counselor was - or seemed like - a real outdoorsperson; the student tour guide was very cool, typical college student; and the museum folks were the same. We did not see a lot of people on campus, and it’s a small campus with a small student body, so very different from UC Boulder, which we also visited. Same kinds of students by and large, but much busier, more frenetic campus vibe at Boulder. Loved them both, but son prefers the calmer scene at CSM and the great engineering program.
