Is it really hard to get into competitive departments?

<p>I'm trying to get into the Econ (BS) and the average pre-req GPA is 3.45 and the average cumulative GPA is 3.57. However, the acceptance rate is 87%. I hear from some people that you don't need much above the minimum to get in and that the department is just exaggerating the average GPA a bit, is this true? According to Cappex 376 students graduated with a Bachelor's in Economics in the 2008-09 school year. So that's like 432 applying to get into the department and 56 being denied. How difficult is it?</p>

<p>Econ is not particularly known for being too difficult. If you know all the average GPA data… just get a GPA that’s above average. If you’re not doing better than that, study harder.</p>
