The earliest class I have ever had was at 8:45 in the morning my freshman year and it sucked. Getting to bed early was the hardest part, because all my friends were up until 2:00 AM or later. It sucks trying to sleep and having to hear that your friends are still up, laughing, and beboppin’ and scattin’ (obligatory seinfeld reference) all over the place. That is why I wised up and haven’t had a class earlier than 11:00 the last two years.

You are a commuter. Your argument is invalid for what most people are talking about.
Until you try living in a dorm and going to sleep at a reasonable hour every night, you cannot make the high school argument.

Are people in my dorm going to be loud extremely late? Ugh. I literally cannot get to sleep unless it is dead silent…

^^ Earplugs bromosexual.

I had a summer internship where I woke up every day at 6 AM to be at work by 7 AM and I left at 7 PM with no lunch break (voluntarily skipped). Just because someone can do it doesn’t mean we can also do it for a class.

jesuis: at ucd we have quiet hours, so you shouldn’t have to worry about loudness past 10 or 11 (forgot which it is)

I don’t live in a dorm, but I do have a pretty loud family (especially my mom) and my house is right next to the railroad. I’ve gotten used to falling asleep to loud noises, haha. I can fall asleep in any situation if I’m tired enough.

Thanks Hella. It was really loud at orientation, so I was a little worried.

** @Johnson81 ** I don’t see what the difference is. My house was almost always noisy Friday nights when my family would be up late watching the game or playing cards, etc. If I could fall asleep with all that mess going on to be up at 6, it shouldn’t be much harder with an extra hour of sleep. I’ve got headphones and I could sleep through the rapture.

Personally, I’d rather have classes in the morning than in the afternoon. 8AM every day is going to be rough, but if you can get up and get going, you’ll probably enjoy being done so early.

Are you joking? I had a summer job, and some days, I had to be awake at 4 a.m. 8 a.m. is a piece of cake.

All it takes is a little motivation (read: coffee).

For me it’s not the waking up part that’s the problem it’s the paying attention in an 8 AM class part. I can wake up just fine at any time when I need to, but it’s always hard for me to concentrate early in the morning. I’m fine working early at a job because you’re always busy, but it’s hard for me to just sit there and listen to a lecture for an hour or two at 8 AM. So if I want to actually get something out of the class instead of just showing up and fighting to stay alert I always try to get into the later class.

If you’re wondering if it’s really that bad to have 8 AM classes- different schedules work for different people, but there’s a reason that 8 AM class was the only one open. I think a lot of people start out college following a high school-like schedule, but then as their classes and schedule become more flexible they realize that’s really not necessary.

people wake up at like 5AM for ROTC, I’m pretty sure waking up in time for an 8AM when living in the dorms is not that bad

there was a period last year where I was commuting from my mom’s instead of my dad’s. My mom’s is farther from public transportation than my dad’s, and on my 8AM days I had to leave the house at like 6:15AM and walk to a bus stop. It sucked but I lived…

At least you can get a part time job after school, I wish my schedule was somewhat better… My thursdays and fridays are in the middle of the day -_-'

The only 8 a.m. classes I’ve had so far were for a freshman honors seminar and gym. 8 a.m. gym is pretty bad, imo. But I still got used to it, and it was only 7 weeks, which was very nice.

As long as the people on your floor have common decency, you should be able to go to sleep at a decent hour.

^Don’t count on common decency though, lol. Think of it as a bonus if the people on your floor have it :)

Yeah, the guys below me had a bass system that massaged my feet very nicely. :D

You guys think 9 AM MWF is doable…

:(

^suck it up lol. I can understand the hate for 8AMs but 9AMs are more than doable. I had two 9:30s and a 9AM last Fall and I had to wake up around 8 to be able to make it (shower, breakfast, commute). Assuming you’re on campus you could wake up at 8:45 and be there on time, though you might be hungry or smelly :O

Seriously. We had quiet hours too, but no one cared.
