Is it really that bad???

I'm thinking of applying to Syracuse for next year, but after going to www.studentsreview.com, I get the feeling that I'm going to hate it there because I want intellecutal stuimulation, I'm not a rich kid from NYC, I don't want to get trashed every night, etc...

Are kids really this miserable at Syracuse? I have trouble believing anyone would go there if it was really THAT bad...

Please, someone tell me it's not quite as bad as it's made out to be...

I visited Syracuse with my daughter. Yes, there are some rich spoiled kids there; however, not anywhere near the extreme that student review leads you to believe. One of my main gripes is the large general education requrement of syracuse. You are requred to take 3 english, 4 in each of 3 disciplins and 2 other courses in social concience. thus, you are required to take 17 core courses, which is more than I have found at any other university. If you don't mind this and don't mind the extreme cold, syracuse really isn't a bad school for a number of majors, and many kids love it there. One of my staff members went there and loved it. In fact, she can't rave enough about it.

Bottom line: You have to take Studentreviews.com with a grain of salt.

I honestly don't mind the whole core requirements thing because I plan on taking a wide variety of courses in college anyway. I just hope people have some degree of enthusiasm and dare I say intellectualism. Even more than that, I hope I get into my first choice schools so that I don't have to worry about any of this, but that's a different story.

The cold doesn't bother me at all, I actually enjoy it after all these years of living wih it.

Is the party/frat scene overbearing like studentsreview leads you to believe?

Sorry for all the typos. I don't know why I didn't catch them when I first made the post. I must have been more tired than I realized. (sigh)

You can look at a glass filled midway with water as half full or half empty. Yes, there will be some of the vacant, spoiled rich kids. If you want to seek them out to feed your unhappiness, you can. There will also be some smart, intellectually stimulating kids there too. If you seek them out, you will find them too.
I promise you that there will be a wide variety of kids. Will the average kid be up to the level of the average ivy? They probably will not be. However, I suspect the top 20-30% will be enthusiastic about their studies and intellectual enough for you. In addition, the wide variety of majors will offer a lot of variety in student's interests and abilities.

that site doesn't even have the correct statistics and seems shady in general.
