Is it really THAT difficult to get into UF?

I posted this in the Florida Colleges forum too, thought I'd get a more helpful response here as well.

Anyway, I was reading about UF acceptance rates and how some people who thought they were a shoo-in for it had been rejected (for example I read an article about how a girl had a 1900 on SAT and was on varsity sports her whole high school career....and she was rejected)

I know my college scores probably aren't high enough so I plan to retake both (I got a 25 on the ACT and 1720 on the SAT) but is it even worth it? This is one of the top schools I want to go to.

If it's really as bad and hard as people say it is then...

It’s “hard” compared to other universities in the state and most of the southeast. Clearly it’s “harder” to get accepted to Vanderbilt, Duke, Ivy’s, etc.

UF uses holistic admissions, so it’s typical to hear about students getting reject, while others with slightly lower stats gets accepted. That’s the nature of holistic admissions.

At UF, 50% of admissions is based on GPA (most important), class rigor (did you take the toughest courses available at hour high school), and test scores (least important of the three).

50% of admissions is based on ECs, leadership, volunteer and work experience.

The essay also matters at UF.

In your friends case, the GPA may have been a little low, and that would have been far more important than test scores. Or perhaps the only EC they had was a varsity sport, with little volunteering, work, or leadership experience. It’s impossible to tell.

In your case, you should think about re-taking your test (ACT, SAT or both), since the scores are a bit low for UF. You can’t do much about your GPA (if you are a senior), so look at improving your test scores (you have until the end of December to get any new test scores to UF), and perhaps expand on ECs, volunteering or work experience in your senior year (that you could list on the App, that’s due Nov 1’st).

Good Luck!!

Thanks for the info! It is news to me that GPA is the most important, I honestly had no idea (my GPA weighted is a 5.3 so Im not too worried about that) and I’ve taken AP classes since freshmen year. Also I have atleast 100 volunteer hours and loads of extracurriculars.
I’m retaking both of them in November so hopefully I get higher scores. :)

Thanks again for the help!

That’s this year’s batch of accepted/rejected students. It should give you an idea of the odds- I’ve got that link bookmarked now. If you’re like me, just too damn curious, then you can look back at all the other decision threads of past years.
Here’s to the decision-day! Take care.
