Is it really that overwhelming?

Is law school truly as demanding as everyone says it is? I know it will be hard, but . . . you do get time to at least breathe, right? Or see a movie with your friends once in a blue moon?

I mean, from what I've heard, law school seems even more stressful than practicing!

Just wondering, any input would be great. :)

well, I went to a law camp a while ago at UCLA. This was summer by the way and still in the library was so many students busting their butts of studying. Since the admission director was there I asked him how hard UCLa's Law School is. He said that on AVERAGE, therer is around 7-12 hours of homework depending on the day. Also, I talked to a student. He said getting a good GPA is impossible. He said you are near the top if you have a 3.0 or above GPA.
It is rigorous and you do have time to have a little fun, over summer.

I have friends at Boalt, UCLA, Michigan, Yale, and Stanford. They all say it's rough.

The cliche is:
First year they scare you to death
Second year they work you to death
Third year they bore you to death

And that's law school in a nutshell.

i still wonder why on the princeton review's best 117 law schools book, the average number of hours spent studying daily is so low....

I would say the process is "intense," not overwhelming. I always made time for "fun." Friday night was always "go-out-to-dinner-and-a-movie night," unless it was finals week. And I even managed to watch a football game or two as well.

Well a football game or two would prevent me from going to LS. I need to watch like 5 or 6 games a weekend to get my fix. I knew I was a football addict when I found myself watching a New Mexico State game.

well, joe, at least you "youngsters" have TIVO. BTW, I have NFL Sunday ticket, Oregon Duck season tickets, and still go to my son's old high school games on Friday nights! Yup, I got a football jones!

"First year they scare you to death
Second year they work you to death
Third year they bore you to death"

isn't a j.d. a 2 year degree?

no, it is 3 years (4 if you go at night)

concerneddad,

Did that platitude get much use in your days as a law student?

To a degree. Orientation was right out of the Paper Chase: "look left, look right, one of you will not be here by the end of the year." As a night student, it was all work. The day students did complain that the 3rd year would have better been spent in a clinical setting.

I agree with Concerneddad--it is intense, alright! In my experience, the first semester was the worst (only time in my life I lost weight without trying!!) mainly because every experience is new, you don't know what to expect, there are many many jerks in law school (where do you think all those obnoxious lawyers that people make jokes about started out???), and the only grade you get in each course is your exam. Talk about a recipe for stress!!!!

Once you make it through that first semester, you know you can do it, you know what to expect, and it's a question of putting in the time to do the work. Being organized and being prepared for class are the most vital things.

If you can get into law school, you can do the work--if you have the desire to do so.
