Is it recommended to write about ECs in your essay?

I was reading over the ECs thread in the Chances forum and it looks as though it's recommended to expand on one or more significant ECs in your essay...

I hadn't really wanted to do this, but my ECs are very varied and could appear unfocused--would it be good to write about them? In addition to the short-answer EC thing, to show my focus? I'd been going to do something personal, but then I suppose my ECs wouldn't get explained very well.

Help?

The best topic for you is the one that allows you the write the most personal, detailed, honest and revealing essay. To write something that is so personal that only you could write it.

The topic that works best for you is probably not going to be the one that works best for someone else.

The essay may or may not be about an EC. For many kids, an EC represents a passion, a personal interest, a set of experiences from which personal, revealing details can be selected. Imo, this is why an EC-related essay often works well. Nevertheless, I've read excellent essays on all sorts of nonEC topics. As I said, the best topic for you is the one that is the most personal, detailed and revealing about you, that gives a sense of what sort of presence you will bring to the campus, to the classroom, to the dorm.

I'm skeptical about them. Try to focus on one basic topic and show many details, vignettes, etc. such that your uniqueness and depth comes across.
