Is it required to take the lab with the class?

This semester, I’m planning on taking Gen. Chem without lab, Gen. Bio without lab, a language class, and a writing class.
Next semester, I plan on taking the Gen. Chem lab, the Gen. Bio lab, a language class, Gen. Bio 2, and Orgo 1 with lab

My advisor sent me a pre-med checklist that basically said medical schools expect 4 semesters of chem with a lab in each semester. Does that mean I have to take the labs with the lectures? So do I have to take Gen. Chem and the Gen. Chem lab at the same time?

Sorry this is a stupid question; I emailed my advisor on Monday (the same day she sent me the checklist and told me to email her any questions, so I know she wasn’t just on vacation or something) but I still haven’t gotten a reply and I’m kinda freaking out because the available labs are almost completely full, but I can’t just add the labs since I need to email my advisor so that she could grant me an “override” to add the labs.

Also, the bio lab requires that I take Gen. Bio first, so i assume I don’t have to take the bio lab with the lecture. How do I make sense of all this? Sorry for rambling, it’s 4:30 AM and I have work soon :stuck_out_tongue:

Meaning does the lab have to be the same semester? In general, no. But different colleges have different rules.

@skieurope Yes, like in the same semester. How would I find that information? All of the med schools I’ve looked at (just to check their requirements) vaguely said “chem with lab.”

Generally speaking you don’t need to take the lab for Gen Chem 1 and Gen Chem 1 lecture during the same semester–unless your college requires you to. But be aware that some colleges do require a lab lecture to be taken concurrently with lab. (IOW, you’ll register for 3 chem classes–lecture, lab lecture and lab.)

You can find out if your college requires that youtake lab concurrently with lecture by checking–

  1. the chem department course webpage
  2. the student course catalog (should be online at your college’s website)
  3. the course registration page (if you’re required to take them both concurrently, you won’t be allowed to register for one without also registering for the other)

At D1’s college, Ochem lab was impacted. (IOW, they had too many people taking OChem lecture for the college to provide lab space for them all. About 1/3 of the students had to take OChem lab the following semester when they got priority registration for it.)

D1 did eventually finish all her Ochem lab requirements off sequence and was accepted to med school without issues because of it.

The only issue you may face is that once you take a lab off schedule, you’ll find you lab sequence gets totally skewed because Chem lab 1 is a pre-req for Chem lab 2.

@WayOutWestMom My university does not require the lecture and lab together for Gen. Chem, but it does for Orgo. Also, for whatever reason, Chem Lab 1 and 2 are taken at the same time.

AFAIK, no med school requires you to take the lecture and the lab in the same semester. My comment was referencing your undergraduate college and its requirements.

@skieurope Oh, ok, thank you!
