is it safe to say that USC is top-tier and prestigious?

no, it’s not

USC is highly respected and prestigous among American universities period.

BTW, USC Class of 2015!

The University of South Carolina (USC) is not really top tier.

It’s maybe second or third tier?

USC is top in film. The notable alumni who studied film there is a “who’s who” of Hollywood.

I know one of my friends considering film (wants to be a director) was considering USC and NYU Tisch. Chose Tisch, but USC was a close 2nd, and he says they’re essentially equal in the film industry. Possibly, USC is a bit better known. In physics, though, Chicago whoops USC. Computer Science? Brown is a top-tier, USC not so much. Etc.

Apparently more than the perennial B12 Champ - Oklahoma, which is 1-6 in its last 6 bowl games, including whoopings by WVU and USC and a loss to Boise St.

Not “top-tier” as in “top-of-the-top tier,” but it’s up there. It’s not hugely prestigious though.

USC is very very prestigious in southern california.
not so much in the rest of the US, let alone abroad.

If you say, “I went to USC,” do people reply:

a.) Oh, really, [insert made up family friend] went there, he loved it! Wow, that’s great, you know [insert second made up family friend] applied to USC and Yale, he got into both but I don’t know what he’s choosing…[continues sucking up]

b.) [blank stare] Wait–is that a school in California? Here, talk to _____, he went to…uh…UCSD.

c.) Oh, [insert made up family friend] went there–he loved it, said they fit everything to his needs…he was so happy when he got in, he said it was just like a family!

d.) [blank stare] Okay…um…[looks awkward until you say “University of Southern California”]…is that like Evergreen State University*?

If you answered A–Prestigious, B/C/D-nope.

Haha. I’m joking. “Prestige”=name recognition and respect. USC is very prestigious unless you went to UCLA. If you went to UCLA, then USC isn’t worth the dirt it stands on. :P

(I really hope the little questionnaire didn’t offend anyone…)

haha xiata, don’t get me wrong…i’m not from UCLA nor USC.
but let me assure you that nobody is gonna reply A when they hear the name “USC”

Go to USC if you don’t want to be impacted by budget cuts. You can take almost any course, every semester. It is based on enrollment. It is expensive because you are paying for your education, not taxpayers. It is not a charity school.

Undergrad, yeah, mostly.
Professional Schools, yeah, mostly
Ph.D. program/faculty quality, from which a school derives academic prestige? No, not even close. Give it 20 years, and it will be.

USC is a great school, it’s definitely one of the most fun highly ranked schools, it also produces successful people who aren’t necessarily academic, intellectual or elitist. It all depends on perspective, for most it is a highly desirable school, but for top students at top highschools who usually go to a top 10 school, USC is a common safety, this can be taken both ways because many lower ranked schools are not even safeties for really top students (would rather take gap year than go to school X).

In many top schools, esp. in California a high / the highest proportion of kids end up at USC, and many smart kids from good schools aspire to go there. I would not call USC an exclusive school, but it is undoubtedly solid, fun, widely known and produces successful people (esp in business).

It’s a favorite school in HK

10 character

Reputations take a long time to turn around. USC has had the current president since the early 90’s. He’s raised a ton a money, and he’s been very strategic about beefing up faculty and programs. IMO, it’s a fine school now, and it has nowhere to go but up, particularly given the state of the UCs.

Yes, it is safe to say that University of Southern California is a top-tier and prestigious. University of Southern California is Californias most prestigious school though second to Stanford.
California school rankings:
Stanford
University of Southern California
University of California- Berkeley
University of California- Los Angeles

^^^^^According to you.

coolbreeze, I think it’s more like this:

Caltech
Stanford
Berkeley
Pomona
UCLA
Harvey Mudd
USC / Claremont McKenna

get out much? :)

USC wasn’t even in the top 50 until 1995 or so. You can only buy so many NMF’s… eventually a school must rest on the research of its faculty.
