Is it sensible to self study AP Lit?

I will be taking IB English 11 next year. Is AP lit similar to the IB exam? Are there a lot of imply and inference questions?

AP Lit multiple choice= fiction, poetry version of SAT Critical Reading--if you can answer comprehension questions about poetry and prose passages (concerning tone, sound devices, etc), you're fine.

AP Lit essays: There are three. First two are analysis of poem and a prose passage. If you can put into well-structured writing what you basically did in the mult. choice, you're fine. Last one asks you to answer an "open" question referencing a classic work of literature. This year's asked how a "country" setting impacts a particular book. You pick the book.

I don't know anything about IB, but I thought the AP Lit test was easy, and in my AP class we didn't do a lot of specific prep; basically we read literature and sometimes wrote timed essays.

AP English tests (both lang and lit) seem like something that test you on your skills rather than knowledge. As long as you have a really good reading skill, you'd do just fine with a little bit of preparation for the test. On the contrary, if you're a poor reader, you wouldn't do fine even though you took the class. The class might teaches you the style of the test, but it's really up to your reading skill to score well on the exam.

there isn't really a lot to study per se. i would recommend reading a lot of books esp classics. look at past fr questions and pick books that show up a lot on #3. try to find someone to discuss the books with, becuase most of the time it is good to have other inisights. finally, be sure to brush up on some literary terms. any review book will help you with that.

I agree with northwestlover, AP Lit is one of the few AP exams that actually tests your knowledge and skill in a subject rather than how much you studied for it. I self studied and got a 5 because I have a really hard english class (my school doesn't technically have AP classes). I do a lot of reading and close analysis and quite a few in class essays.

to study, I used the 5 days to a 5 thing that sparknotes does and the most useful thing was the collection of literary terms. the best thing you can to for this exam is choose 4 or 5 books to go over and know a good deal about. I went over the books and also looked at the cliffsnotes for each in order to find themes in the books.
