is it stupid to not want to apply because of...

sports? i've been a die hard UofM fan for as long as i can remember (mom was a grad), UofM is a longshot for me and i know msu is a good school, but i've been taught to hate msu all my life. it's got mostly what i need: cheap tuition and i have a really good chance of getting in (though i would like to go out-of-state and be on my own, for the most part), as well as some of my close friends going there. but i'm keeping it now as my last resort. any insights?

There's a lot of people I know who were big UM fans who ended up at State because they couldn't get into UM. They grew up hating MSU, but have had no problem changing sides in terms of sports.

It is stupid for you not to apply because of sports. It's a good school and has everything that you need.

MSU is certainly not a bad school (my various cousins are going there, and now I'm going there after being rejected from Harvard and Yale). I could have gone to the University of Texas here at home, which certainly has a better reputation in computer science, but choose MSU. I have a 33 on my ACT, above average for MSU, but I didn't think it was really important. And if you're more interested in sports than college you should probably think again.

I just have to say, MSU is gonna kick UM's arse in football this year! I have forseen it!

It's a campus of 40,000+ students; if you want to get away from home (which is required, as mostly all freshmen must live on campus) you still can be on your own. Just make sure you don't hang out with the same people from high school all the time, and be friendly to everyone

If MSU is your last resort, it's a pretty good one
But go to whatever university that interests you (and that you can afford). Just realize that chances are you'll be happy wherever you go (sports aside) if you make an effort

at least apply just in case you ever change your mind!

MSU hasn't beaten Michigan in Ann Arbor since 1990. They've won 8 straight at home and 6 straight in the series.

well there's plenty of time for that to change, now isn't there?

Basketball's a different story.

Hey man, I'm in the exact same situation. I'm thinking about getting a group together to hang out and watch the UM football games on saturdays, while everyone else is at the MSU stadium.

well i figure it'd be useless (and dumb) to still be a UM fan if i go to state.

Awesome sauce, just because you're a UM fan now doesn't mean you should miss out on all the fun of being at a college football game! Watching a game on TV is just not the same as being at the game in person. If you're still a UM fan when you're at MSU, you can always tape the UM football games and still go to the MSU ones. Just because you prefer one team over the other doesn't mean you still can't have school spirit! :D

I know how you feel, but I was the opposite. I applied to UofM and got in, but I just couldn't imagine myself going there. I'm a third-generation Spartan, so I've been raised to hate all things maize and blue.

I'm a die-hard U of M fan, but am probably going to MSU. Personally, I hated U of M as a school and fell in love with MSU. I am not a huge college sports fan, so it won't affect me that much. But it's stupid not to go to a great school because of sports.
