I was just wondering if it was too early to sign up for college mailing lists during the freshman/sophomore years of high school ? Any thoughts ? Also is there a place(apart from the PSAT) where you can sign up for a mass college mailing list ?

I signed up my sophomore brother for the mailing lists of 350+ schools, and I’m not done yet.
It’s hilarious.
The two of us also get a ton of unsolicited mail. It’s fun to collect, I have a couple huge piles sitting in my room.

So I shouldn’t sign up for the mass mailing lists but it would be OK to sign up to mailing lists of a couple of colleges that interest me ? Also, is sophomore year of high school a good time to visit colleges ?

dude, the really good colleges don’t send mail, because they don’t need to, only mediocre and profit colleges do, not to mention they are all cliche and nonsense, :)

Only sign up for the one’s you like. For standardized tests, DON’T opt to get college mail unless you want your mailbox drowned in mail from schools you’ve NEVER heard of. Unless you like that sorta thing.

You’ll regret it later. At first it’s kinda cool to get mail from different colleges, but after a while you get really annoyed.

Most people have boxes that they just throw all of their college mail into. I know i do.

Most people don’t start visiting colleges until junior year, but there’s no problem seeing them sophomore year. The only thing is, if you do see a college sophomore year, I’d go visit it again before applying there. Your mind can change a LOT from 15/16 to 17/18.

It’s only cool if it’s from colleges you care about but if your getting a whole bunch of mail from random colleges because they got your name through the College Board (seriously if you haven’t taken your PSAT yet, opt out of CB sending your information to colleges.) Although you could just give your information to colleges you care about.

^^^yeah the good colleges don’t ever send out info through the mail.

I have recieved mail from schools like Columbia University and a few other schools up there just because of PSAT/collegeboard tests (nothing really personal, of course; I am probably just another number to them at this point), so I think the ‘upper’ colleges do have mail. I think you should sign up for a few, since colleges do value at least a little their applicants being interested. It could also inform you more and allow you to decide whether you actually like that school.
