Is it too late for extracurricular activities?

I am going to be a junior in high school and I have done no extracurricular activities at all. I am planning on joining 2 clubs that I’m passionate about, and also getting a job the summer before senior year. But will colleges not like the fact that I started to do all of this so late?

Lol it’s never too late, especially when you are a rising junior. You have PLENTY of time left. A friend of mine started engaging in ECs in junior year, and still got into Duke. Cheer up.

Colleges won’t like the fact that you’ve started so late, but junior year does still give you time to step up your game. Is there really nothing at all that you’ve done? Not just clubs, but think about any activities you engage in (athletics, music, volunteering, art competitions, etc). Just joining a couple clubs won’t really get you too far - if you can, make sure that you’re actually accomplishing something with those organizations or taking leadership roles. Membership alone doesn’t really indicate passion or dedication.

As long as you do whatever truly interests you and not just joining EC’s to pad your college applications, you’ll be completely fine. Colleges just want to see what interests you, and if you just happen to find what interests you in your junior year that’s perfectly fine.

You say that you have done “no extracurricular activities” but I bet you have. ECs are interests and activities outside of class. Do you do activities with a religious organization? Do you have any hobbies or collections? Do you cook? Think about what you have done with your free time. Those are more interesting than just joining a club.

Well i’m a drama major at my school and I’ve put on various performances infront of over a hundred people, does that count even though it’s still technically in school? I also joined key club sophomore year but I only went to three events and stopped showing up to meetings after 2 months or so, can I use that in some way?

Yes! It counts! And remember, don’t do an extracurricular activity just for the sole purpose of using it to enhance your college application. Do it because you love it. Btw, make sure that your SAT scores are straight! Take this from a rising senior who is now taking the SAT late because I was too focused with school, AP scores, extracurricular activities and sports. I know you’re just a rising senior, but seriously, start thinking about your senior year, take campus tours to universities that you’re interested in and enjoy your summer! If you have any questions, feel free to message me.

@Michael2266 were the performances assigned for a class? If so, then you might not want to put them as ECs but you should still mention them in the application. Is Drama what you want to do in college? Is that what the clubs are for?

@soontobecolleger No its just a passion of mine but I’m not planning on pursuing it, and thet were assigned for class. The clubs i am interested in are for computer programing and volunteering opportunities.

Very few people list that they were in the church choir in 6th grade or in girl scout in middle school. Most ECs on college applications are for activities in the last year or two of high school, although many of them are continuations from earlier activities. First chair violin, but of course that student didn’t just start playing as a junior in high school. Captain of the soccer team senior year, but has been playing soccer for 10 years.

I’m sure you have some interests that you may have been doing on your own but now can become an EC. Robotics club? Drama at a community center? Tutoring math to 3rd graders?

Concentrate on quality, not quantity. Do feel like you have to list 10 activities if you only have 5 good ones.

I’d still definitely make sure you include your drama passion - it definitely makes you a more interesting and well-rounded candidate! Have you done any drama work that wasn’t an assignment or worked tech for any productions? Those would be worth mentioning as extracurriculars for sure.

@Michael2266 Is computer programming related to your intended major? It’s ok if you’re undecided but it’s good to have some kind of consistency in the application.

@soontobecolleger Yeah I’m planning on majoring in Computer Science, and I’ve begun to look for some summer internships I can do that will help me learn more about the subject.

@Srabookworm No, the only drama preformance I’ve done that wasn’t an assignment was a performance I did in school that my drama teacher organized, in which I preformed my stand up routine in front of various people including the director of Saturday Night Live. Even though it was one performance, should I include it aswell?

I would not bother to include a one-off performance (it looks like you are desperate to fill up lines in the application IMO) but if you have been involved in HS productions I’d include those. I’d certainly go ahead and join clubs you care about and get a job next year as planned.

I think that’s interesting enough that I would either use that as material for an essay - you could maybe list it as an EC if there was significant prep work involved, but the format of the common app doesn’t make this especially viable.
