I have some regular HS chemistry background. I'm picking up Chemistry: The Central Science and TPR Cracking the AP Chemistry Exam. That should nail me a 5, but the only question is: Do I have enough time, you think?

4 months left till the ap exam. When I got that textbook, it took me 6 weeks to finish reading, but back then, I had just finished my AP Chem class. So, for me, since I had previous knowledge, I was able to finish reading it quickly. After reading the textbook, a week before the AP Chemistry Exam, I started reading PR on Thursday and finished on Sunday (I was able to remember this cuz it was a stressful week). I think you could finish within the four months.

Personally, I doubt you’ll have enough time. If you have a really easy class schedule or are willing to sacrifice a lot of free time, MAYBE you could do it.

I also doubt you will have the time… AP Chem is not for the downhearted; even MV Calc. Students in my class dread the conceptual thinking that is part of the class (hence the 60-70% Average in the class)

Forget it then.

Chemistry is conceptual thinking, so it might take longer.

I’m in the same boat you are, except I am in IB chem. We haven’t gotten far, but I really want to self-study. I’m going to take a stab at it, if I don’t like my score on the AP exam I won’t send it to schools.

Don’t get discouraged :)

You can definitely do it in 4 months. I knew virtually no chemistry last year and started studying basically around like spring breakish and still managed a 5. However, the only reason i even bothered was because most of my extracurriculars (theyre seasonal) had ended by then and because i was reasonably confident in the other… 7 tests i was taking.

i think whether you can or you cant really depends on how quickly you can get conceptual stuff. i considered myself at least reasonably smart for trying to do it, but its certain that not everyone would be able to pull it off, but you have a decent timescale to work with at the very least.

how motivated are you?

it’s not too late. I’m starting today

You may be able to get a 5 by studying in 4 months, but not a solid understanding of the subject. If you intend just to get out of a class in college and you will not need chemistry for your future career, then sure… why not. If you just want a 5 to get some sort of distinction from AP like AP Scholar etc, then sure… why not (though colleges don’t really care about your AP distinctions). If you intend to go into anything that may require some sort of chemistry and it could help in your future career, than no… definitely do not. You won’t get as clear an understanding as I stated earlier.

Yea depends on how much you’re willing to study. My friend was able to get a 5 on AP Chem with only 2-3 months of studying.

I think it is too late.In my school, the AP chemistry class started last summer which was 11 months before the exam, when i wanted to transfer to the chem class in late September the teacher said i was no way to catch up with it.And i am ok at chemistry,so it’s tough.

Personally, I don’t think self-studying AP Chem is a great idea. It really requires a firm grasp of concepts and lab experience to truly understand the subject matter. But I suppose you can cram your way to a 3+ with Princeton Review and a textbook if you’re that set on taking the exam.

I’ve decided to not take the exam but start preparing for my Gen. Chem. I class this fall instead :).

good luck with that class.

Thank you ^. Should pull out an easy 4.0 if I can nail down what I need to.
