When I filled my fafsa, I put "will file" for taxes and I completely forgot to update it. I called my mom today and she said she filed in February, but I totally forgot to ask. I just logged on and I guess I can still make changes but will it affect me that I didn't update it for 2 months since she's filed? I'm shaking right now because I am my EFC is 0 and fafsa is the only way i can afford college as it will cover my tuition and most of my living expenses next year. I go to a college 8 hours away from home and I don't know what I will do if I don't get the grants. I called the fafsa hotline but I can only talk to a person monday-friday & I also checked online but all they say is the fafsa was due March 2nd. Overall, I filed on January 8, put "will file", they sent me an email saying it was processed, and forgot to update it. Am I okay? Will this effect how much I get, if any at all? Thanks

Update it now. I thought the whole reason you were supposed to do it as early as possible with estimated numbers was to KEEP there from being a deadline problem. You can’t be the only one who had to wait until April 15. If it doesn’t CHANGE what you reported before, I would think it would just be ‘verification’, wouldn’t it? In any event, all you can do now is do the update, so do it, asap.

Update it NOW. It sounds like you are currently IN college. To be honest, if your financial situation hasn’t changed, you should be OK. Just get it done…right now! You did file your FAFSA on time…the initial filing date is the date used.

The FAFSA is NOT giving you money. The college is giving you money based on the information ON your FAFSA.

Does your school also require the Profile?

Just update the data with DRT as soon as possible. The school may ask for further documents for verification.

If you owed money on your tax return you may not be able to do the data retrieval yet. See pinned thread above on data retrieval time.

There is no point to calling the FAFSA people, it is your college who uses the data and figures out the funding awards. When you have the FAFSA finalized, you can call your college. Don’t you have an award letter for this year yet, based on the estimated figures? If the final figures are close it shouldn’t change anything.
