Is it too late?

I want to be an architect and most colleges require an art portfolio to be accepted into that program. I, however, have not taken art in high school as I have been in orchestra and my school kinda sucks and doesn’t offer zero periods. I am taking art 1 as a junior, I’m a sophomore now, and am wondering is it too late? I know that the class alone won’t be enough but I’m not sure what to do.

It’s definitely not too late. You still have a year and a half to take art classes, plus whatever you might arrange over the summers. Architecture schools don’t expect your portfolio to reflect experience in architectural drawing. They are looking for creativity, design sense, presentation and a facility with various media, especially drawing.

At some Bachelor of Architecture programs portfolios are optional or not required at all. Some very good BArch programs that do not require portfolios are Auburn, CalPoly SLO, CalPoly Pomona, Penn State, UofTexas Austin, Virginia Tech. I’m sure if you do some research you will find others.

I would also note that you might choose to get a BS or BA in architecture or architectural studies plus a Master of Architecture instead of starting immediately on a BArch. Generally the BS/BA+MArch takes 6.0 years (though timing can vary depending on the program) versus the BArch’s 5.0 years. Most BS/BS programs do not require portfolios, though some do or at least recommend them.

If possible, you should think about attending an architecture career exploration program during the summer between your junior and senior years. This will help you decide which architecture degree is best for you and also help you develop your portfolio.
