Is it too late...

I messed around sophomore and 1st half of junior year and only got a 3.7 GPA. But last semester, I worked hard and pulled my grades up to a 4.3 (3.9 unw) Is this too late for me to pull my grades up?

um...........no

Too late for a top 20 school, yes. For beyond that, no.

Suze, are you being sarcastic, or do you really not know what the heck you're talking about?

"Only" a 3.7 uwgpa? Are you KIDDING?

no offense polaris. For the first semester of my junior year, it was a 3.7 weighted

I had a 3.85 uw (3.96 w) and still got into Penn, Cornell, JHU, and others, without any outstanding EC or awards.

Get your senior semester grade as high as possible and you'll be fine.

No, I'm not kidding, unless the 3.7 was at Exeter, chances of a top 10 school are miniscule.

Exeter grades on an 11.0 scale so the GPA you mentioned wouldn't work out of Exeter....well maybe if you were a huge development admit.....maybe then.

He said he raised it from 3.7 to 3.9 uw.

I think you have just as good a chance as anyone else. Try to remember that GPA is only one component of the presentation you are making and you have shown improvement and capability. Don't let everyone here scare you....we don't know enough about you to say whether this is the critical factor. I mean it probably more than anything depends on how many other applicants from your HS and city are also applying for I have come to believe that the competition within a HS is sometimes the issue. Have confidence.....sell yourself, write some amazing essays and remain proud that you have improved your record.

dude. it's over

jp. what kind of question is this?
keep trying your best. that's all you can do.

3.7....is it rated on a 5.0 scale???

I got a mere GPA of 86/100 in my gr11 year...is this ok?? in western Canada.. 86-100 is rated as A grade.

I am stilllllllll unclear on this GPA that OP is discussing. Are we speaking term by term.....or the cum GPA. Anybody can have a bad term but I think the cum is the pertinent figure here. I don't know what that number is for the OP.

final GPA in gr11, 12...no cum

Colleges want indiviudals-not statistics, that's what all of the adcoms and admissions deans have told me. enough said.

I wish I had a 4.3 weighted GPA! Geesh..I think you will be just fine..especially since you had an upward grade trend.

What exactly happened freshman and sophmore year in terms of grades? If you are an unhooked applicant and there was a "C", then that is probably the end of getting into a top 10 school. If it was all B's and A's with the result of being a 3.7 weighted, then it is still probably the end of getting into a top 10 school. I think that the problem on these threads is that some people want to be encouraging and tell you what your reaches are, and other people (suze and myself) want to be practical and tell you what your matches are. The low gpa's will most likely be a killer, but you can still apply so long as you have safeties. There are always anecdotal stories to support the fact the somebody got in.

There are just too many applicants to the extremely selective schools. Once they eliminate everybody below a certain level, there is the final cut. In the unhooked round, adcoms are chosing between have high gpa's with no problems, excellent EC's at least at the local level, SAT at least at the 1500/1600 level, and SAT II's in at least the mid 700's. Among these people, they are basically picking between clones and they have four/five times more than they can accept. Having a bad freshman and soph year will hurt you significantly. Fortunately, this insane competition for a few brand-name colleges that aren't really that much better drops off after the top 10-15 ranked schools.

(I have read the OP as combined 3.7 (uw) in fresh/soph followed by a 3.9 (uw) in junior. Total for all 3 yrs not given.)

Depends on how competitive your school is, but there's always a chance.

Let me describe my situation in more detail. All GPAs are weighted but my school does not give extra grade points for honors classes in 9 and 10 grade.

9th grade 1st semester: 3.7
9th grade 2nd semester: 3.9
10th grade 1st semester: 3.9
10th grade 2nd semester: 3.4
11th grade 1st semester: 3.7
11th grade 2nd semester: 4.3

I took all the AP classes as my school. My ECs are bad. Just the usual sports, music with like 200 hors com. service.

I do have good test scores tho
34 on the ACT
800 on the IIC
800 on the Bio M

I REALLY REALLY want to go to UCSD (I m instate) my UC GPA comes out to like a 3.8ish. My question is, was my last ditch attempt to pull up my GPA too late for UCSD?

My school uses a 4-point GPA scale...is it fine to have GPA like 3.15 or 3.44 in gr10, 11 year???
