I am from Dublin,Ireland and am thinking of going to a boarding school in the USA
The school I am interested in is a 5 day boarding school in Pittsburgh,PA
I have a good friend in Zelienople,PA(30-40 mins away) who went to my school in Ireland
Is it too much to ask can I stay with them most weekends?
They said yes but really what are they thinking(The family is a dad,mother,2 daughters and my friend, the son)?
I am a mature, independent and also low maintenance kid

You are required to have a stateside guardian anyway, aren’t you? I don’t think it would be out of line at all to ask.

what school is it?

shadyside academy

thats what i thought

do you think its a great school?

If you are coming from another country, I HIGHLY suggest you look into true 7 day a week boarding schools not 5 day boarding schools. In my opinion, that would be a huge mistake.

why would it be a massive mistake?

5 day boarding schools are typically populated by kids who live in the general area. Being far from home, you should seek the structure and support of a full boarding school. Those schools provide a social life and social structure as well as academics. Frankly, I would recommend it for any student interested in boarding.

Is there a particular reason you are interested in Shadyside? There are many great schools out there.

It is my understanding that most students at Shadyside are not boarding students, and that the boarders are a small percentage of the students. I knew a family that had children who went there, and this was a few years ago (4 or so). You should check this out thoroughly.

Wouldn’t you prefer to have activities on weekends at school like many of the full boarding schools have?

Most children at Shady Side are not boarding students. I live literally about two minutes away from the school. But it’s okay, you would fit in. If you really want the boarding experience though, take everyone’s advice and go to a 7 day school.

just to get this clear, I am only going for a year(sophomore year)
it is to experience live in the States
so I wont truly get a boarding experience but I will get a 5day boarding experience and they do do plenty of activities during the week
however, what I gain is that I will experience family life in the USA
because if I move to the US when I am older my life would be more similar to weekends with a family than a boarding school

Shady Side Academy offers a year long international exchange program for students. You should check with admissions about this program. It is listed under Global Learning on their website. This might be the type of experience you are looking for since it is a formal year long established exchange program. I have heard that SSA would like to expand this program. A student from Ireland might be appealing to them. If you were placed in a program like this, you would probably stay with SSA families on the weekends and also have the chance to visit your friends that live near by. You should really either get on the phone or email them with your questions. International Exchange programs (year long) can be found at other schools as well. Good luck!

I have emailed them and I havent heard about this foreign exchange program
The people I have emailed have seemed so nice in their long, helpful emails
With a lot of schools, the elite schools, they can take ages to reply and the response is as short as possible

I sent you a pm
