Is it true if you apply right before the deadline...

as in- if it is due January 15th, and you submit your application/postmark your application on January 14th- that admissions officers take that as you are lazy, uninterested, evil, stupid, etc. ?

I didn't think that it would make a difference but some people have told me that they look at those things too? Especially if you apply online?

um, i doubt this is true

well, do you feel yourself being lazy, uninterested, evil, stupid, etc. ? No, cuz if you apply right before the deadline you should really have a good reason. They know most of the students are very busy studying for the SAT's or working on essays, so they do not care if they get your application on the 15th of December or on the 31st.

Some admissions officers have said that they do view applications sent at the deadline differently. They don't like procrastinators. And if you read these boards, you'll see that the number of errors on last-minute applications has increased drastically, which makes them sloppy. "Evil"? "Stupid"? No. "Lazy"? "Uninterested"? "Careless"? Quite possibly.

Chedva, can you please list what schools have said that.

I have talked to many admissions officers and my schools college advisor and they all have said that when you send your application (as long as its before 11 59pm of the day of the deadline) has no effect on admissions. In fact many schools don't download the application until the day after the deadline..

Lazy, Uninterested, Careless.. mabye
Meticulous, Extra Proofreading, Making sure everything is perfect.. also could be a possibility.

Waiting until Jan 1st to send it out doesn't mean you procrastinated

Well, it is possible to proofread and perfect an application before New Year's Eve! I tend to think that the quality of the application matters more than the date of arrival rather as long as it makes the deadline.

I don't have a specific school. I know that I've read it on these boards numerous times. And I did hear it from at least one school my d looked at, but I don't remember which one it is.

It is true that you may have a reason other than procrastination for delaying until 11 PM on Jan. 1. And any feeling is obviously a generalization. I'm only relaying what I, as an adult, could easily feel about all these last minute applications. (And, by the way, perfectionism isn't necessarily an advantagious trait either.)

Penn and Stanford reps told they don't even see what time the app was submitted as long as it is before the deadline.

^that's a major relief since they're my last two...

I waited to find out about a couple awards I expected to receive...
(and I got them :-D)
I would be most upset if this caused admissions officers to perceive me as careless.

if a college's adcom looks at that. then i don't think i want to go to that school

I had to send out my UMD application pretty much right before the midnight deadline... for several reasons that definitely do not include laziness. But of
course, they wouldn't see that.

Last year a friend of mine got into a scrap with admissions officers at UGA about sending her application in too close to the due date.. but then again, she was being really disrespectful to them.

Ah, I am just panicking, because my counselors haven't finished my recommendations yet.. and I wanted my apps in AT LEAST 2 weeks before..

Don't worry cordova, your counselor/teacher recs can arrive after the Jan 1 deadline. Colleges give some leeway for those sorts of documents.
Best of luck!

A lot of kids don't submit their apps until the deadline because they want everything to be perfect!

^^^ yep people send things in at the last minute because they are OCD. now how is that a bad quality?
NO EFFECT ON ADMISSIONS. URBAN MYTH

I believe a deadline is a deadline. If you were told 11:59 PM, then IT IS YOUR RIGHT to turn your app anytime, as long as it s before the deadline. You are free to choose the strategy that is best for you. You can prepare one app at a time starting September and them submit them starting with your #1 school. Or you can work on your essays starting July, but send them all on Dec31. IT IS NOT THEIR BUSINESS AS LONG AS YOU DO WHAT THEY ASKED FOR.
