I've heard in some forums that MIT seems to prefer students who took the SAT over those who took the ACT. Is there any basis to this theory?

I know officially they don't have a preference, but I was just wondering if there is a definite statistical correlation between those who got admitted and which test they took.

Thanks!

How about the ones that took both?

No, they really, really, really don't have a preference.

Most students who are admitted took the SAT, but most students who apply took the SAT as well.

More people take the SAT than the ACT. Therefore there would likely be more people accepted that took the SAT

...unless we were already talking percentages and not numbers

When the evidence is that "I heard in some forums that MIT seems to prefer students who took the SAT over those who took the ACT," generally nobody is talking percentages -- they are talking anecdotal evidence and/or rumor.

The admissions statistics page indicates that last year 3098 applicants submitted ACT scores and 453 were admitted (14.6%). This is in line with the overall percentage of students admitted (12.5%).

Thanks, mollie, that's what I needed to hear.

phew! I was afraid that my recent increase in my ACT math score would be somewhat fruitless against an overwhelming trend.

yep. good to hear :)
