Is it true that a high school counsler has the power to get you into any college?

My counsler stated that she had the power to put me into a selected college. ( I have pretty low scores and I also pay 10,000 a year since its a private school)

Yes, she has the power to put you into any college.

...

No, she doesn't.

she is a little full of herself

No .

No it is not true.

Is your counselor the lord almighty?

Well, if you a freshman/sophmore, she has the knowledge to direct you in the right direction, give you the right tips, ec offers and such, but nothing guarentees a 100% acceptance into the best colleges of the world.

Let us know where you go to school and if she really is the "magic college fairy" so we can all move to your school! NOT!

lol thanks for the info it helped out a lot now i know not to take her word with that

If she could do that, she'd be the richest person in the world.

...You should have known that from the beginning.

Todays word is - gullible.

In the not too distant past, the premier New England boarding schools had very close relationships with the Ivy League schools and other top institutions which almost assured admission with only a phone call. Certainly some private school officials still maintain powerful relationships with elite colleges. So it may not be too far-fetched today.

Garrity your post seems very logical because my school does have a lot of connections to high powered schools. Students that had medicore gpas got into some of the best colleges.

Your counsellor may have some pull at schools he or she was worked at in the past. For example, my CC was an adcom at Brown for awhile, and we (a west coast school) have sent a disproportionate amount of kids since he's gotten here.

Sounds like someone is a little full of themselves.

There are published accounts of this type of pull in the New Yorker about two years ago or less. Also other articles in the New York Times and, I believe, the Wall Street Journal.

In fact, Hotchkiss was founded as a school to prep students for Yale. Either Exeter or Andover was founded to feed students to Harvard.

Certainly admissions folks attend conferences and seminars together, and count on one another for references and jobs.

It is not true that one counselor or school could get one into "any" school. But certainley could have strong relationships with several schools.

I wish. At best, we can sometimes find out why you didn't get in....
