Is it true that it’s better to have less than 10 activities on the Common App?

Specifically for Ivy Leagues. I have 10 activities right now, but if I combine the societies, I’ll have 8. Is this better than separating them? What if I have different positions in each Society?
Also, how would I log summer camps into the Activities section if I slept there, away from home? Is it 24 hours a day? Or do I need to subtract the amount of time I spent sleeping?

No, it isn’t true. Put them in order of importance to you (and the story you are telling with your application). And I’d take out sleeping time. I think colleges know it is wonky to calculate hours and don’t parse it too much.

Bump!

No, use all 10 but I agree that you should put them in order of importance. I used all 10 in mines and hours are estimates, not exact.

I’m not sure what else you want to hear, but I agree with @intparent . Although I would further say that your summer camp hours should just be the hours spent on activities - so not including sleep, eating, bathroom, etc.

If you have 10 (or 8 or whatever) solid activities, it’s fine. If you’re looking just to fill up space by stretching to 10 activities, it’s not. More does not always equal better.

It could be true. Some taut you don’t want to just fill up 10 spaces with gobble-die-gook. It appears honest and real if you stick to 7 and try to hit it out of the park. Sometimes filling out all 10 make it look like you are just trying to fill up space. In my student’s case, she had 10 real good ones, so she did use up all 10 spaces. If you have 6 - 7 that are stellar, that’s all you need.
