Is it true that UVa students are snobbish?

That's what i heard from my friends. Most of the students come from "First Families of Virginia"..... I am really considering UVa but then after all these comments i'm like speechless.

Who cares? It's a great school.

I just got back from an overnight stay at UVA and I did not get this impression

There are always going to be some snobs wherever you go (at UVA, typically members of very selective frats/sororities) but generally the people are very friendly.

It's a huge school, not everyone can be a snob. You'll be able to find people you like. But it's in the south and it's competitive, so you'll have your fair share of the rich snobby prep types.

I'm starting to worry becaause one of my friends seriously discouraged me from coming here. He says it's only full of "rich white kids" who are selfless and "arrogant". That said, they're not welcoming - although they have beyond excellent education.

Do you mean "selfish" not "selfless"? Last time I checked, a person who worries about others needs before their own is selfless.

For example: Mother Theresa was a selfless individual.

Personally, I wouldn't worry about it. There are people out there like myself who come from middle-class backgrounds raised in the city. You just need to get over that stereotype if you want to find your kind of "clique" although those "rich," "preppy" types might be less selfish or snobby than you think. Just be open and you'll be fine. Nonetheless, going UVA is a great education opportunity.

sorry - yeah i meant selfish

I think if your really concerned about it you should visit the campus if you can... I heard the same stereotype about students at Richmond but after my overnight I saw that the students were really nice... of course there were "snobby" students... but that's anywhere you go...

I can't coz i live in Indonesia - which is basically the other side of the world! I can't even go coz i also have my IB exams in May.

Ah, that's too bad... I guess you can hope to get some replies on here... or you could look up some reliable sources online... also try campusdirt.com, it has stuff from actual students on there about almost anything from best professors to the difficulty of "hooking up"... Or if not and you really wanna go to UVA, I'd say go for it you're sure to find your niche, it's a big school, with lots of different types of people... :-) Good Luck...

thanks, are you going to uva?

No, I was accepted but, I'm getting a better scholarship and fin. package from University of Richmond, and I really like it there... so I just decided literally like 2 minutes ago that I'm not going to UVA.

Considering the number of out of state and nation students UVA is accepting, snobbish whites and lucky minority students mix at this place as about as long as a beer bong lasts -- it is not the University representing Virginian students.

Now, U of Richmond, that is a fine place to go, congrats on your smart decision if you can afford it...

Not sure what yo u are trying to say about the population at UVA? Can you explain?
