I was just wondering if it was possible for USC to accept a student to the university but the specific department (ex. SCA) not accept the student to their program? If so, than does that student just get accepted as undecided? Is there two separate decisions or is it an all or nothing?

I think it’s two separate decisions.

do you have to put undecided or open as a second major on your app or is this an automated decision?

Thanks for the reply milkmint !

Yes, it is true. You may be admitted to USC but put in Dornsife as undeclared.

Is it difficult to switch majors or departments later?

dreamchaser–you are automatically considered by USC (Dornsife) as undeclared major if you are not admitted to your 1st and 2nd choice majors (if listed).

forever–it is simple to switch Dornsife majors. For Schools with separate admissions offices (SCA, Thornton, Viterbi, Marshall and others ), you’ll have to apply as an internal transfer and there are limited spots and acceptance is competitive, so no guarantees. Many choose to minor in those Schools, which does not require the same application process.
