is it true that...

this was a facebook msg i got from a current NYU student...

"Hey, I came to NYU last year wanting to do IR and I strongly recommend against it. IR loves to brag that they only let in about 25 students a year, but that's because most talented NYU kids quickly decide not to apply in the first place. In fact, it's a running joke at NYU that about 95% of the people who come here wanting to do IR switch to Met Studies. Look into it.

If you don't believe me, take International Politics and see for yourself. It is a math class. You do not learn about world affairs, you learn about "if country A has x resources should they go to war with country B?." Furthermore, I have had friends who dropped IR because, though they don't advertise this, they rarely let you study outside of an NYU program. If you do IR, you can forget Semester at Sea or enrolling in a German University. And don't even think about applying for that human rights program in India.

On the plus side, they are really cool here about letting you design your own honors major--I'm doing one in International Development. "

can anyone validify this? thanks!

that's kind of scary.. good thing i was waitlisted at NYU (since i applied for the IR major) lol

They randomly sent it to you for no reason? o.o

I've heard that most study abroad programs not through NYU are kind of a hassle to transfer credits from; however, I do know that some NYU kids do Semester at Sea or whatever. NYU has plenty of study abroad programs anyway, so I don't know if that would be a real argument against it.

Other than that, I know nothing about IR, so don't ask me...
