Is it true that...?

Is it true that majoring in something random (like econ) may be better than majoring in something like biology or biochem if one is planning to apply to med school?

There is no definite answer to your question. You can major in anything for medical school as long as you do well in your major and earn a respectable GPA. Yet, there are cases where people get into medical school with low GPAs. Basically, in order to get into medical school, you need to do good in your undergrad work and earn a high GPA, take all prerequisite courses, and do well on the MCAT. Also, research and shadowing a physician is highly recommended.

My understanding of this topic is that if you want to go to medical school, major whatever is your absolute favorite subject, unless it’s like art or something in which case you probably wouldn’t want to go to medical school anyway. Math, econ, chem, physics, psychology…as long as you take the prerequisites!

You can major in anything. Just make sure you do well in the prerequisites (biology, Organic Chemistry, etc.). Do well on the MCATs. Gain internships or shadow a physician in a field of your interest. That will increase your admissions chances in med school.
