is it true

As far as I know URM's are put into a pool with their own race and based on that the top X% are admitted. Since URM's are statistically proven to perform worse on standarized testing (for various reasons) the average URM applying to UVa does not have the same average SAT score of a white applying to UVa.

So you're arguing that there is a quota? Not that I would necessarily disagree, but the official word is obviously, no quotas.

it does matter cuz all these ppl who were hispanic in my school who were at the same level as me or even not up to me got into all the schools that i wanted to go to esp UVA like this one girl who was hispanic and an alumni had lower SAT scores, lower GPA, all easy classes, and less extracurricular activities and she got in and all the asains got WL!!! its sooo unfair!! like it shouldnt matter what ur race is it should matter on the applicant and plus how can they prove whatt ur race is??? like i could have wrote down hispanic and they would never know right?

well, if your previous post is any indication of your writing skills, i can see why they got accepted and you didn't, iceskatershelly.

haha (10 char)

@soccerguy

Yes, I see how my idea would constitute a quota. Perhaps they don't rely on the top w/e percent, but I think they still put URM applicants in their own pool.

What about Native Americans? Any advantage/disadvantage there?

well i dont write like thsi on papers and essays ....this is my internet writing

iceskater, thats good to know. Be careful though, studies show that that can carry over into everyday speak, and eventually into formal writing overtime.

Wahoo, I dont know about at UVa, but at most colleges its a significant advantage

wahoo,

i would venture to guess that being 100% indian would be the biggest advantage anyone could have, not only in college admissions, but in most aspects of life where someones else is choosing you out of a pool of people.

being a martian would help you more.

We had many black applicants from our school this year. Many did not get in. Some did.

Could someone comment on the Access UVA initiative?

Access UVa has helped me out immensely. I'm an out of state student and I'll graduate with very few loans under my name. I will definitely make a donation to the financial aid program once I get a job.

I guess a sucker is born every minute.

That "report" that jags posted is a clear example of a hit job as I've ever seen. The data is so flawed it isn't even funny. And the author is a professor at GMU?

Go to CEOUSA.ORG and start clicking around to see who these people are. You'll start to understand why they're so biased. The Chairperson is Linda Chavez, a neocon. She's part of the PNAC think tank, with Wolfowitz, Cheney, Rumsfeld...et al.

Gawd Jags, nice try though...

Indiana Jones, how is the data "flawed." Forgetting the extrapolated bar graphs, the data of % of black students accepted with certain GPA and SAT scores vs. whites (i.e. the important and relevant data) was REPORTED BY UVA TO THE STUDY.

The report wasn't long, why don't you read things before you make comments which make you sound ignorant. I guess we're only allowed to cite sources which were published by Karl Marx, Jean Jaures, and Ted Kennedy...

Honestly Jones, there were more logical fallacies in what you just said than I can count, and not one time did you mention anything constructive.

Shes a conservative, thus she is retarded, thus she fabricates data, thus she... etc. If you want to have an informed discussion on this topic, your going to have to come up with actual um... information. In the meantime, you have only made yourself look foolish.

If you give me some examples in the flaws of the report I'll be glad to consider them, but until you do, I'll take cold hard DATA (even if you don't touch anything but the DATA reported to the study by UVA itself) over forming my opinions based on who she has lunch with. This isn't set theory.

ehiunno, first off, Linda Chavez is not the author of the biased "report." She's the chair of CEOUSA. Do a little research about the organization and people involved first before you take what they promote as gospel. There's clearly a biased agenda from that group. Anyone can manipulate data like Armor did. But hey, most people are just like you, they believe things they want to believe.

On a side note: I must agree, most neocons are tarded. Especially the ones who still support Bush and his failed war.

Have a nice day!

Did you miss the sarcasm when I said that being a conservative makes her retarded. What I was doing was mocking what you just did, that is, making hasty generalizations, and basing your opinions on associations with a few people. You still haven't provided me with one single speck, or even a hint of a speck of, any kind of fact to back up anything you said and no one is going to take you seriously until you do. You cannot deny that the percentage of black, white, Hispanic, and Asian students accepted is factual data.

Honestly, I have nothing more to say to you until you manage to formulate some sort of coherent argument that isn't just "conservatives are lame."

Also, I made no mention of Chavez being the author. And besides, simply because Armor wants to expose rampant racism doesn't make him a neocon. Now I don't know the guy personally, but I tip my hat to anyone who works to expose the injustices of racism in the US ;)

ehiunno,

Ah, there's the rub. "Racism" Racism against whom? How do whites get discriminated against in society? Were there laws limiting a white's ability to vote? Were there laws allowing for whites to be owned? Were there laws about whites not being able to be treated fairly in society?

You may not like how society has chosen to level the playing field and end generational poverty, but that's just too bad. Come talk to us when your relatives have been enslaved, and declared property, then you might have something to complain about.

Until then, get an education cause lord knows you certainly need one.
