Does TAP not apply for the most impacted majors @ UCLA (Most importantly Communication Studies)? I read on previous and much older threads that TAP will have no effect on a COMS major's admittance because it is so impacted. That the only advantage is the alternate major.
???

alot of people say that on here b/c they just listen to what other people say and think that it’s true.

[UCLA - Transfer Alliance Program](http://www.ugeducation.ucla.edu/tap/faq.htm#adm)

it says nothing on there that TAP does not apply to communication studies

I sure hope you are right :)

Purpose of TAP:

“– To provide priority admissions consideration for the College of Letters and Science to students who complete the TAP and satisfy transfer admission and major requirements
(except Communication Studies, SOAA, TFT, & Engineering).”

its the very last line of this link

“TAP certified students receive priority consideration for transfer from UCLA’s College of Letters and Sciences (not engineering, communications, film or theatre majors), and may opt to complete the requirements for a second major.”
source:http://www.mtsac.edu/instruction/honors/colleges.html

“The Honors/TAP certification is only valid for majors in the UCLA College [formerly College of Letters and Science (except for Communication Studies)]. It does not apply for Film and Theater majors and majors in the Schools of Art, Nursing, Engineering, and Computer Science.”

those links have not been updated for fall 2010. there has been many changes to ucla tap program since last yr. the most notable change is the inability to choose an impacted major as a backup, and also the exception of comm. studies for TAP. if it’s not stated on that official UCLA TAP program pg, it doesn’t matter what the other pdf. or links say

^where are these changes mentioned?

Lakerforever, how do you know your information to be true?

b/c it’s on UCLA’s official TAP website (which i posted above)

in previous yrs, they clearly stated that comm studies was excluded from priority consideration. but this yr, it is simply placed in the same categories as the other 10 most impacted majors and the site no loner states that it is excluded from priority consideration upon completion of TAP

As indicated on the Undergraduate Admissions Transfer Admission web page:

“Some majors are highly selective. For these majors we look for stronger preparation: most preparatory courses completed before transferring and a significant number of courses completed at the time of application.”

As of September 2009, these College of Letters and Science majors include:

* Biochemistry
- Business Economics; Economics; Economics/International Area Studies
- Life Sciences majors – Biology; Ecology, Behavior, and Evolution; Marine Biology; Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics; Molecular, Cell, and Developmental Biology; Neuroscience; Physiological Science; Psychobiology
- Communication Studies
- English
- Global Studies
- History
- Political Science
- Psychology
- Sociology

By clicking on the major from the web page listed, the user is linked to each major’s requirements page.

so as long as you do TAP and complete prereqs, communications is basically the same as the other majors (minus the fact that it has the lowest transfer rate due to the high volume of applicants and low number of available seats)

Thank you!!

I was told by the UCLA admissions counselor this year that Comm is excluded from TAP. So I am going to go by what he says since he is one of the people who does the admits

^yea that would makes, except for the fact that the admissions committee doesn’t do admits for comm studies. the faculty members from the comm dept do. and the ucla rep from my cc said comm is not excluded

lakerforever, are you applying as a communications major as well??

^yea i applied. but i only applied to comm b.c thats the only major i completed prereqs for and i also completed TAP and i thot it would be a waste if i didn’t apply to ucla. i probably wont get in (since i’m a business major and wrote my essay about business; didn’t even mention comm), but even if i get in i prolly wont go lol

I know that Comm staff does the admissions, its just seems confusing to get different information.

Sorry for all you peeps apply for Mass Comm seems tough this year like every year
