i've heard conflicting views about the relative safety of the surrounding LA area around ucla. is it unsafe?

Not at all. Westwood is one of the nicest cities, in my opinion. It is very beautiful and not too far from the beach. It also kind of gives you the feel of a small college town. I would say it's much safer than the area around USC.

No, it is not unsafe off campus.

It's definitely safe. Bel Air, Westwood, Beverly Hills are all affluent areas with a good means of protection.

I can't say the same for the area around USC. That's not to say that it's a bad school or the actual campus is unsafe, but I wouldn't particularly want to walk down Figueroa alone at night.

westwood is a wonderful area. the people all seem like nice suburbanites or college students. there aren't as many vagrants or whathaveyou as in the surroundings of other schools. places are well-lighted, new, clean.

of course, "safe" is a relative term. things can be stolen anywhere and there are always criminals somewhere. but all in all, it's a pretty safe area.

it's definitely relatively safe compared to most areas of LA.

If you go to Bel-Air watch out for Carleton. He'll bore ya to death.

Do NOT MESS with Carlton!

Did anyone see Will Smith when he was in Westwood?

define unsafe. sunset blvd north of ucla can be unsafe while driving, and you definately wouldnt walk around there. crime-related, there is no problem during mornings, daylight and evenings. needless to say, you shouldnt walk around ANYWHERE alone at 2 am.
