Is it wise for a pre-med student to go to Emory?

In your opinion , do you think a premed student should go to premed?

I also got into UCSD, UCLA, UCB, Michigan and USC.

Emory has an overly competitive premed. So in my opinion, not worth it, because med schools care a lot more about your GPA than what school you went to for undergrad.

Does not mean you should go to a community college for 2 years and then a 999th tier college just to get 4.0 GPA.

Yes, I too, would like to know. How is the competition, grade deflation/inflation, general toughness of the sciences/overall classes, etc… I realize they’re very broad questions but if someone with an average intellect and relatively decent work ethic went to Emory, would it be possible to pull of good enough grades for med school and still enjoy the college experience? I’m also quite bad at math and science. :(

I have a relative that’s a prof at emory, and she has some opinions about premeds…

Emory is a very good school for med schools, especially top med school programs. It really depends on the classes you take and how much you put into them. If you put forth a lot of effort to get the high gpa, then emory has all the internship and advising opportunities to round it out. If you aren’t willing to put forth as much effort, you might want to go to a state school for a high gpa, because the emory name isn’t going to help you all that much for med school, especially because med school is less about where you go and more about your gpa and mcat.

Personally, if I were premed (which I was for a while), then I would choose emory over the california schools (unless there is a significant price difference), but I would consider michigan if it’s ann arbor, because that school is ridiculous for anything math/science. I wouldn’t go to a california state school because of the constant tuition increases and decreased funding… it doesn’t look like a nice situation to walk into, though Berkeley is amazing… Berkeley might be worth the financial troubles, because its programs are amazing. i would say berkeley is better than emory, as long as you’re ok with big schools. So, if anything, I’d yes to Berkeley if you can get the finances to work. I have a friend who is a premed there, and, though the program is extremely competitive, she is doing very well. It’s possible to do well, even in a competitive department. You can always take courses over the summer for the grade boost.

OK, as I’m writing this, I am thinking you should go to Berkeley, but if you don’t like big schools, then I would go to emory. berkeley will help you more with med school admissions, but it’s def more competitive than emory.

GL!

If you want to do medicine, then I say follow the money. I’m assuming you’re Californian, so go for UC Berkeley if you’re ok with big schools.

Save up for med school rather then shelling out all your cash for an undergraduate education. 10 years from now, people will ask you what med school you went to, not where you did pre-med.

Yeah, I like Berkeley too, but a good undergraduate experience should also be important. The “learning” atmosphere might be more pleasant here. If the person does well here they can easily get into a good medical school. However, if the person is from California, then I would agree that they should go to Berkeley as it is much cheaper, and I’m pretty sure the OP will like it. I just don’t think anyone should undervalue undergraduate education even if the end goal is medical school.

How is USC for pre med?

Emory is tough for pre-meds, but if you put in the work, you will be fine.
