Is it wise to be taking 24 credits?

Let me start off by saying that I messed up my college-career royally. I'm supposed to be a sophomore right now, but I'm a freshman because of lack of credits. My freshman year I made all A's, the first semester at my state university, the second I decided to stupidly transfer to a private Christian college out of state. So even though I made good grades there, most of the classes won't transfer back to my state u. To make it worse, I decided to go back there this last Fall but in the middle of the semester I had a crisis, withdrew and moved back home.

Now I'm back at my state university. I am severely lacking credits and I don't want to fall behind anymore. So I'm taking 24 credits.

Anthropology 101
Women's Studies 113
Biology 197 + Lab
French 113
English Literature 231
Philosophy 102 (Online)
Information Systems 101 (Online)
Public Communications 101

These all fulfill general requirements. The Info Systems class is because I plan on declaring a major in Economics and it's a pre-major requirement.

I plan on taking summer courses as well and I've mapped out a plan to where I can get to 60 credits by Fall 2011.

Do you think that in my situation it's okay to take this many classes? I feel like such a loser for essentially taking last semester off. I would've never thought that I would do that, but all I can do is just move forward from it. Do you think that I have ruined everything or does my plan sound good?

8 classes consisting of 4 humanities, a foreign language, a science and a couple of other classes seems undoable to me. I would rather spend an extra semester or take courses over the summer/J-term rather than going through this (if its physically possible).

Is it really UNDOABLE? I know it will be hard, but I think that it’s possible. I’m taking three of my classes at a junior college, affiliated with my state university, that doesn’t start until this week. So far I’m completely caught up in the reading and assignments for my first five classes and it’s been a breeze. I’ve looked over the syllabuses and I think I can handle adding on more classes.

I just have to learn to allocate my time efficiently and stay on top of everything. Today I even got future reading and assignments done early. I think I can do it. I see it as punishment for taking last semester off and I will gladly endure it if it will alleviate my guilt.

So tell me, has anyone done this many credits before?

Well if you really think you can do it, no one will change your mind. I would be completely unable to do that. Also I feel like your life will be very unbalanced for a semester, but you know your abilities far better than I do.

These seem like easy classes, but having all of them at the same time will suck. Biology especially will probably give you a hard time because of the lab.

I’ve only taken 1 humanities class, so I can’t really say for the rest, lol. But I understand your position, sort of. Last semester, I took 18.5 + 2 jobs. It was my toughest semester to date, but now I can take it easy towards graduating 1 semester early and have time for other things. My GPA for that semester was something like 3.57 (not what I needed).

Doing 24 credits won’t seem that bad right now or in hindsight when you’re finished. But while you’re preparing for 4 exams and doing 3 homeworks for 1 week of class, you will probably regret it.

I pulled so many allnighters that it became a regular routine to cram until 2 minutes before class. Your classes may be different, because I imagine the tests won’t be that hard. idk. I’m a engineer, so it’s different.

Yes, it’s undoable. Quit being ridiculous and take your damn time.

Please keep us updated. I want to know how long it takes before you have a mental breakdown.

(Seriously though, drop some of those.)

That has gotten to be the dumbest idea I have ever heard. Why not just take a few classes over the summer to catch up? Seriously. This isn’t a race, and most people don’t finish college within the standard 4 years.

My roommate is also taking 24 credits… but have you asked if you can take that many credits? Here, 21 is the maximum you can take (my roomate is acctually taking 21 for spring plus 3 in winter session, which ended… but he said 24

I’m taking 16. All the cool people take 16. seriously, taking 16 credits will get you laid.

Taking 8 classes is likely to result in you having a meltdown and having to repeat those same classes anyway. Why not reduce it to 21 credits?

Ok. Today was the last day to drop, so I dropped my French class. I figured that French was going to be a tough class and I don’t even want to learn French anyways.

So now I’m taking 21 credits, is that a little better? :)

Doable. I’m taking 18 units and I work. I have very little free time. If you don’t work, you should be able to keep up; finals will still be a pain, though.

I don’t work, which is good, except for never having money. But I’m feeling happy about my plan now :)

This summer I’ll have to take Business 101, Econ 102+103, Accounting 201+202 and a language.

That’s 18 credits to get done in the summer. That gets me to 65 credits! Wow. I guess I’m going to be ahead :D

leolibby,

At your university, you can actually take as many credits a semester as you want as long an advisor signs off on the overage. I took 27 one semester (3 wintersession) and knew someone who took, IIRC, 30. Also, wintersession classes do count towards your Spring credit load officially–they appear on your transcript as such, are included in your Spring semester GPA, and best of all, are covered under Spring tuition. :)

MissNoella,

I question if your summer schedule is possible. Summer classes tend to meet on tightened schedules (e.g., 3 hours a day, four days a week), so it’s pretty much impossible to take more than 4 five week courses (2 + 2) or more than two ten week courses in a summer.

My university has three summer sessions. So I think I could spread out the classes over all three sessions so that I’m not overloading. I might take out the language, so I’d just be doing 16 credits. That way I’ll be exactly where I’m suppose to be.

Then that Fall, I’m taking a nice, long study abroad in Jamaica to pat myself on the back for catching up.
