Hello there, I am a CC student applying to the following programs. I understand that UCD and UCSB are considerable reaches, but I would appreciate any input on whether or not my chances are so low that its not worth applying.

Cal Poly Pomona - Biology
SDSU - Biology
UCSC - Biology or Neurosci
UCD - Biology
UCSB - Biology or Bio Anthro

-2.9 UC GPA, 2.95 CSU GPA. IGETC completed. I will only be able to complete the first semester of physics, but all other prereqs are/will be finished.

Transferring w/ almost 100 units (20 from AP)

EC:
-1.5 years of volunteer experience in an ER, and several months experience shadowing/volunteering in a hospital pharmacy
- A year of volunteering for the Forest Service
- Current chemistry tutor
- A couple years of work experience.

You might get waitlisted, I had a 2.9 for UCD and (poli sci) and I got waitlisted, but they want you to write a essay on why you want to get in . For me it wasn’t worth it

So during that semester you got at least one D or F? Did you retake those classes or are you in the process of retaking them now? I think at the very least you should list them as Planned for spring semester if you are not retaking them now.

Let’s be realistic, your chances are pretty much zero for all those schools except cal poly. Bio is an impacted major. I’m going to have a gpa around 3.5 at the end of fall and I don’t even think I’m going to get in at UCSB for Bio Anthro( my major is Bio Anthro). You need to raise that GPA.

I’m not really sure what your actual chances are at Cal Poly, but it shouldn’t be that hard to get in. My cousins was a transfer student and got in with a 2.7. He was a Spanish major though. Biology is a popular major there. It’s just really hard to chance someone when the schools sometimes do not release stats on accepted transfer applicants by major. The only ones that do are UCLA and UCSB. Regardless, 44% of the freshman enrolled had a GPA below 3.0 so your chances are better as a transfer student.

It does seem that you have a good chance at UCR. Their middle 50% GPA is from 2.7 to 3.3.

And about my GPA, It’s a complete speculation. The average gpa admitted for the Anthropology major was 3.46 with an interquartile range of 3.16-3.68. I’ll be slightly above average; not the best situation I guess. And I 'm going to be missing prerequisites that aren’t offered at my school.

That’s funny, my little brother goes to San Diego State. SDSU got something like 60,000 applicants last year alone, and their acceptance rate is actually lower than most Ivy league schools. You can attribute this all to the fact that it’s a party school. That being said, it’s a pretty competitive school to get into. I read somewhere that they will deny any transfer student that’s missing prerequisites because they get so many applicants. That is probably not true, but you can get the idea. Honestly, just apply you never know.

With your gpa, I would apply to UCSC, Cal Poly, and SDSU.
The middle 50% GPA for transfer students at UCSC was 2.9-3.5. You might have a shot there since your GPA will be higher than 25% of the transfer student body. But It honestly all depends on the major. The average GPA for Biology could be 3.5 at UCSC; you never really know. If you have the cash, just apply to all of those schools. I’m pretty sure you’ll get accepted to at least one. Most likely the state schools.

For Fall 2011, Biology had an admit rate of 31%. I know people get rejected from Cal Poly Pomona and end up at UCR for Biology. It is either around the same or lower this past year.

Using one person’s major GPA to say that it’s pretty easy to get in is horrible logic. It’s easy to get in for certain majors but anything in the realm of science and engineering are competitive to extremely competitive.

If you can raise the GPA up to 3.2+ for Biology, I am pretty sure you could get in. Cal Poly Pomona is a numbers game. The longer it takes to hear back from them the farther you are down the list. Biology is impacted at Cal Poly Pomona. You have a shot, sure. It is all a numbers game. If you don’t meet a certain threshold, you won’t get a spot.

I’m sure you could probably get into Cal Poly Pomona if you raise your GPA as well as UCSC. Pretty sure you have zero chance at UCD and SDSU. SDSU is extremely competitive because of it’s location and you know that state schools will give their preference to people in their area, thus ranking you down in priority of being accepted. Add UCR and UC Merced onto the list if you really want to go to a UC. I don’t know anything about SDSU’s acceptance rate, but I know they are nationally ranked at least and a “research” school.

I believe your chances are hard all around because you’re competing with premed students who chose a Biology major and carry super high GPA’s.

Thanks for the response. What do you think my chances are currently at UCSC?

This is my 3rd year at CC, and its really time for me to go and move on my life.

I didn’t include UCR because I have already spoken with their counselors and I will most likely end up there. Neurosci is easier to get into, as a backup.

Try looking for the old UCSC transfer thread there were several people who posted similar stats, if the got in or not I don’t know, but can help get a better idea than other people replying who are in the same situation. Or google admission stats.
