Is it really worth getting 1000 volunteer hours at my local hospital? Does volunteer hours really matter? They probably do because I want to transfer, what do you guys think?

Im sure it helps a LITTLE, but from what i have read and seen, everybody does it these days so you should probably find something else that gives you experice in the field. Try and ask a physician if you could possibly shadow them, if thats how you do it. You might have to apply to something to shadow a doctor.

do volunteer work because you want too learn about medicine and help out, your missing the whole point of volunteer work if your only willing to do them "if they help you get in".

How do you 'shadow' a doctor? Do you just go to your normal doc and ask him if you can follow him around for a few hours? Do you call the hospital, try to get the right person and then ask them to set it up? Is there an application form? Should I stop asking questions here and go see a counselor..?

LateRegistration, it's would depend on where you live. Some places, through a university or the hospital itself, have programs that are designed to allow high school students the opportunity to shadow a doctor.

Some people will contact either their primary physician, or a hospital/a doctor in the field they are interested in, and just ask if they can shadow the doctor.

You may have to sign a form basically saying you will discuss patient information/other private information with other people.
