Is it worth it for me to go to Berkeley

I can either go to Berkeley or Arizona State for my engineering undergrad. Berkeley offers the third best engineering school in the country while Arizona State is... well... Arizona State. I have been offered $22,000 in scholarships and grants to Berkeley but the total cost is around $54,000 a year according to the website. For ASU I have been offered $15,000 with a total cost of $23,000 a year. Of coarse these costs including everything from tuition, room and board, fees, food, travel, etc. Due to personal issues my parents cannot really contribute money and I have some savings bonds but not much. Would it be worth it for someone in my situation to choose Berkeley. I do plan on attending a grad school like Berkeley after I get my bachelors in mechanical engineering no matter where I go.

hmmmm cal vs. arizona state…especially in engineering…such a tough call…

but seriously, I don’t know why after 22k in scholarships berkeley still comes out as 54k to you. If it’s that much of a difference go to AS. But it should be about 21k after scholarships which for an out of stater is a bargain. Gogogo

The 54k is the total cost without me taking out my scholarship as is the 23k for ASU. So it’s really around 30k and 8k if their estimates are accurate.

if you don’t go bankrupt before you get a job, i’d go to berkeley.
& if you don’t have the money to go to berkeley, then you don’t really have a say in the matter to be honest.

the answer is straight up berkeley engineering no question about that. and yes, it’s a good idea for you to come here. the real question is whether you literally CAN go to berkeley (pay the bills needed to get the diploma)

So if I understand it correctly, net cost after non-loan financial aid is:

Berkeley: $54k - $22k = $32k per year, or $128k for four years
Arizona State: $23k - $15k = $8k per year, or $32k for four years

I.e. difference of $96,000 over four years. Correct?

Berkeley mechanical engineering graduates who got jobs after 2010 graduation averaged $62,863 per year in pay, according to the [career survey](https://career.berkeley.edu/Major/MechEngr.stm).

Yes that is correct. I am currently applying to as many other scholarships as I can but probably won’t know if I win them until after I have to make my decision.

Remember that loans are always a useful resource.

ok, $98K difference to either go to berkeley or arizona state… this one seems easier than my dilemma… i would go $98K poorer to go to berkeley on this one…

also, new this schyr… 1 year ms program for engg graduates… 16 majors to choose fr… it was mentioned on our rohp…

I was thinking of doing AFROTC starting my second year. How much of my costs do you think that would cost?

*how much of my cost do you think that would reduce.

54k :frowning: ? Are you an out of state student?

yeah I live in Arizona, that’s why ASU is my fall back
