My friend wants me to audition at SUNY Fredonia...
but I'm just wondering if it's worth it... seeing as how they've had numerous audition dates already, and I can't imagine how competitive it will be for those last few spots...

Is it worth it to learn one more piece, and then drive all the way there for what may be a lost cause?

While I can’t speak to Fredonia specifically, I would assume that if a school is still auditioning applicants, then it still has openings. That would seem to mean it would be worthwhile to audition. You may want to contact the school to see how many openings they still have for your discipline/instrument/major.

Ultimately, whether or not learning the extra piece, driving the distance, and doing the audition is worthwhile is a question that only you can answer: how badly do you want to have the option of going to Fredonia? If you have an acceptance that you are happy with already, then it may not be worthwhile, but if you don’t have such an acceptance and would love to go to Fredonia, then it would seem worthwhile.

Why would you need to learn a new piece? Does Fredonia require something different from the others? More importantly, how can you get a new piece ready in time? My D and her friends who auditioned worked on their songs for months and months.

If there’s a chance and you’re interested, I guess no harm is done.

If Fredonia is a school you would consider then there is certainly no harm in auditioning. Be aware though that the March 27th audition is the one that comes with no music scholarship money so if you were counting on that it is something to consider. My son’s music scholarship offer at Fredonia dwarfed the academic scholarship offered.

I know several who have done the late audition date and were informed on the spot of acceptance. Considering that you auditioned at Crane, the aud requirements should be the same, thus no need to learn another piece (unless you think that was a weak link and that another piece would show you in a better light). As for scholarship money, if you are seriously considering Fredonia, it might be worth a phone call to the Chair of the Department to see if there is anything left “in the pot”. Weren’t you looking at a Music Ed major? Perhaps there may be some money in that area?
Would your other options be to sit out a year and work on your music skills and audition material? If you would be happy at Fredonia, and you must have music scholarship money to attend, the fact that that usually isn’t available at this late date coupled with the fact that your other auditions weren’t up to the standards for Crane and Ithaca might make this something you want to put off. Could you ask them if a mid-year admit might be an option? That would give you a couple of months to regroup and strengthen your position. You could also go the Community College route for just a year and reapply- after that, transferring music credits can get sticky, but do check with the SUNYs to make sure. Good luck to you and please, keep us posted.

If it is a lost cause in your mind you will have hard time performing your audition. Like they say in investing, past performance is not a measure of future success. You can’t tell which school is taking what this year.

Make sure you know what is required, perform what is required, and be ready for any interview. If you are trying music ed, the interview is important too and it is important that you are pursuing music ed because you love to teach children. It will come out in the interview if that is not the case. Do you know if it was the audition or the interview that was the issue at Crane and Ithaca? Do you have a voice teacher to help you get ready? Take the shot if you want to go there. If not, take your CC acceptance and get ready for next year.

I agree with what the others have offered.

If you can do it within the parameters everyone has stated, it is worth doing.

Which will you regret more down the road - auditioning now or deciding not to audition?

Don’t wait to long, the cutoff for that audition was March 8th, even now I think you would need to call and ask to be added to the list.

I talked to my chorus teacher, and I decided I’m going to go for it. (:
