I am thinking of that Family Guy episode where Peter buys that tank from that cheap car sales man. :-p

is there anyway u could buy the support service from dartmouth?

I'm pretty sure Dartmouth's tech support will fix your laptop for a fee normally. And there's bound to be techies at Dartmouth... ask around if you need help.

if we buy apple through dartmouth, is the free ipod still attached to the package?

Yep. On the computer store page in Banner it says, "Purchase an Apple System and you are eligible for an "Free" 8GB iPod Nano or 8GB iPod Touch (after Mail-in Rebate)"

I have been thinking about buying a tablet pc for when I go out to Dartmouth in the fall. They seem like they would be great for note taking, organization, studying, etc..... Has anybody seen any on campus? Obviously Dartmouth doesn't offer them through the computer store even though Dell has recently come out with a model. Anybody have any insights on the situation?

great for note taking

You write faster than you type?

honestly, please don't get a tablet ... you'll be singled out as 'weird' and even if that doesn't bother you, and it shouldn't ... there's absolutely no reason to get one.

I've seen none on campus, and i'm pretty sure if i did, the other people in my classes would be sure to make fun of the person who did to no end...because there is no reason to spend so much money for something that works almost as well as a notebook and pen. Furthermore, they aren't very useful if any of your notetaking invovles diagrams of any type, or drawings ... so overall i don't think they'd be as useful as you think they are.

sneamia- no, but you cant really take great notes on a regular laptop

rightnotleft- It is actually less than the stuff dartmouth is offering. And why can't they make diagrams or drawings...thats kinda the point of getting a tablet vs a normal laptop. And if worse comes to worse and I am made fun of everyday to no end, I can flip the screen and it will just be a regular laptop.

I appreciate the responses but does anyone else have any experience with them? Students at other colleges who have them seem to love them. I guess if I am the only one on the entire campus with one though I might just go with a standard laptop.

Tablets have faded in the past few years. Although I don't have much experience with them, I have heard that they still have too many quirks to be effective. A tablet will also be less powerful than a standard laptop. The Latitude XT only has a 1.2 GHz Core 2 Duo, whereas the models offered by Dartmouth have a 2.4 GHz processor.

Personally, I would recommend just buying a standard laptop and either typing notes or taking them by hand. However, if you are sure you want a tablet, also look at the Lenovo X series tablet.

Thanks Ken. I know I am sounding totally biased here (maybe I am), but I have heard that Vista has greatly improved tablet functionality from the XP Tablet Edition. Also, not all tablets are low powered....some models (fujitsu t4220, gateway c142XL, others) come with a full 2+ GHz processor that has almost the same specs as the XPS dartmouth offers.

Do many students actually take notes on their computers at all? I am guessing it depends on the class. Is the general consensus just to use paper and a pen?

i would say about 80% of students take notes in a notebook; many more might have their computers in class, but most likely that's because it's a large class that's boring, not because they're being used to take notes.

In smaller classes, and any class that's not powerpoint based, it's relatively rare for somebody to have their computer open at all. At least, that's been my experience. In fact, if somebody's computer is open in one of my classes, i'm pretty sure that means they're not paying very close attention or they're doing work for another class.

Does anyone know if Dartmouth's computer store will offer a free printer like Apple is doing...?

If you order through the Apple Store website, then yes, I believe you can order a printer and receive a rebate. Though I don't know why you'd want a free printer in the first place.

There are lots of printers all over campus and it is free to print black and white (I think you get $40 each term but almost no one runs out).

I don't think it's worth the money and space to buy a printer.

$7 for a printer is not bad at all.

Ask the person who still has the new printer sitting in the box from freshman year because it was a good idea that Chicky had a computer in her room but she never used because she used greenprint ;)
