Is it worth it to have a TV in my dorm room?

It's around the season where I start to drop hints to my parents as to what I want for a graduation present and at the top of my list is a TV i can put in my room. Now I know that Court and Mews are the only ones wth cable and I want to stay in Balch so would it be stupid to even bring a TV? Do ppl at Cornell even have time for watchng TV?

I would like to know the answer to this too! Mostly for movie watching tho...although I wonder if there would even be room??

My friend from high school who attended Cornell (class of '07), lived in Donlon said she didn't have a TV freshmen year. She said she was better off that way because she was busy all the time anyway and it served as a big distraction to the kids who did have them.

But I should add that I probably will end up taking one anyway because I love to watch movies. :)

LOL...well I guess there's no point in bringing a tv, all I need is a sleeping bag and pillow since I plan to live in the library.

i had (and have) a tv (i lived in donlon last yr too) and it was great. I hooked my laptop up to my TV and watch movies i was "shared" ;-) it's a lot better than watching it on my laptop screen.

plus, i get fox so i can watch friends and will and grace late at night

is fox the only channel you can get?

Who cares? Fox is the only channel I need.

Gotta love the Simpsons...

Fox and ABC for me.. I need my Desperate Housewives lol

YES what would life be without desperate housewives??????????

Along those lines, does it help to have a TV in your room if you are taking a film- or TV-related writing seminar? Is it necessary? Do you get HBO?

If you're getting a new computer, theres this thing called "Windows Media Center" or something. you can watch tv on your computer through a cable hook up and everything, plus do all your mp3s and stuff. you can "TiVo" stuff to your hard drive too. Thats always an option. Instead of a TV, splurge on a nice computer monitor

Thats hot...can you get like wireless cable though? LOL Or maybe a mini-satellite!!!! :)

lets not ask for TOO much here...

I've definitely heard of what you're talking about, Sparticus. My dad got a new iMac setup and he has something called iTV which is the same thing.

OK well then PC ppl and mac ppl can get it! score I think i'm definitely going with that. My grad present will probably end up being a frickin sweet computer. I want 2GB RAM so i can do like 1000 things at once...

just be careful what you download. there was a virus epidemic last year, and many people had their internet cut off.

Notron Antivirus
Spybot Search and Destroy
Adaware by Lavasoft

3 of my favorite programs!

you can easily rent a projector from the library. thats one reason i love cornell. great library. they offer rentals including cameras and video recorders

Sparticus, what about bandwidth limitations imposed by the school? Many colleges, in an effort to crackdown on illegal downloading (you know this is) have limited bandwidth/month at like 2 gigs or something. At 350-450 megs/episode, TiVoing stuff will quickly push you over the limit. I wonder if its possible to get broadband through any cable TV connections, however....
